What pisses me off more than remakes is movies based upon video games.

Doom. Resident Evil. Mortal Kombat. Silent Hill. "Let's see, why don't we take a violent action game that suceeded because it wasn't belabored by any little nicities like storyline and defined characters, and turn it into a movie. The video game was a raging sucess, we'll make a mint!"

Have any of those NOT sucked?

HEATHEN! BURN HIM!

The first Resident Evil is really everything I hate about modern horror movies all rolled into one. Well, aside from whats-her-name from The 5th Element waking up naked in the beginning - I have to admire a chick who wakes up in strange places naked in every movie she's in. But I digress - it relies entirely on shock effect and isn't really psychologically disturbing at all - that scene where the zombie's eye snaps open in a closeup is a perfect example. It makes you jump. Have her slowly open her eye with a twisted half smile and the right soundtrack, and it'd be a psychological mindfuck instead of merely a shock. But, instead, they take the cheap way out and just shock you.

I granted am not the greatest source of knowledge on all things horror movie so it's possible I've missed one or two, but I can't remember the last time I saw a genuinely psychologically disturbing horror movie since like The Exorcist.

Meh Resident Evil is more an action film than a horror film... and Silent Hill was just plain cool

Silent Hill... If you ignore the balls they made of the plot, it really kept the atmosphere of the game intact, and that made it a success in my books.

Silent Hill kept the atmosphere but the movies story sucked balls. The plot was totally retarded whereas the plot of the game was far better and actually worked. The game was truly eerie as fuck, it was freaky, and scary, at times playing it.

I would suggest that you run out and find a copy of A Tale Of Two Sisters. That was probably the most chilling film I've seen in absolutely years.

The thing that really fucked over the storyline was that they changed it from the cult that tried to summon their demonic god (hence what happened to the town) to a christian witchburning church and some vague demon that visits alessa to help her seek revenge. It largely doesn't make sense most of the time.

The game's plot was without fault, and it was a product of much more intelligent writing.

That said, I've watched the film a few times, and enjoyed it. You just have to switch your brain off and pay no attention to the flimsy storyline.

speaking of which, did you see either version of the Exorcist prequel that was made a few years ago? the director who was originally hired to make it was fired because it wasn't graphic enough for today's audiences, and was too slow/psychological, or some BS reason like that. the one that was originally released, made by the "new" director, was pretty good, until about halfway through, at which point it got REALLY predictable, really fast. i have the original director's version on DVD though....turns out that both of them have parts i like better than the other lol

Totally agreed. I actually fell asleep at one point during the movie but woke up right when they had the witch trial scene. I was like, "WTF????"
