![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Just saw Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005)Metal This is very well piece of work. It's intelligent, articulate, and covers a surprising amount of ground for it's running time. I really liked the feeling of validation, of hearing the thoughts I've carried about metal echoed in this film. Apparently this is also a 2 disc set, which will hopefully come in tomorrow, I'm real curious to see what the second disc has, since disc 1 gives no clue about its contents. The only thing tht pissed me off (although it doesn't me) was the commercialization aspect. I know metal, like any other music, is a business, and that this business needs to survive to serve fans like myself. I also knew that the glam scene in the 90's was mostly commecially inspired, what really surprised me though, was that alot of the satanic imagery was driven by balance sheets as opopsed to artistic intent, and come on even Black Sabbath owned up to it. I mean damn....y'know. ...And you gotta love Tom Araya, and his admission that "God Hates Us All...was a great fucking title"...apparently Mr.Catholic by day Slaytanic by night is a bit confused, so I deem this prick and his band of non-talent (insert favorite word for shit here) false. Anyway, yeah go rent this if you like metal, I can't wait to share this friends, some pizza, and some shots of Jager. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hey... you could have posted in my "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005)" thread here Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005)... Someone just posted in it yesterday and it was the second thread on the list... ![]() Quote:
No matter how you dice it, the huge majority of metal is all about image. I mean, seriously, you don't see too many death metal bands with members dressed in tweed and khakis with short hair and coke bottle glasses. If metal didn't care about image at all, you'd see stuff like that, but you don't. I personally think, out of all the musical genres in the world, none cares about image as much as metal (with the possible exception of rap). So many bands and fans concerned about whether something was "metal" enough. I like how in the documentary, he mentions that every metal band is trying to sound "eviler" than the previous metal band.

Most of the satanic bands dont advocate that. Blood Ritual, F. Ex, is just about glorification of LaVayen Satanism and Black Magick, and though did a few songs expressly about some older 'rituals' for things like Hands of Glory, they expressely state in the booklet "Don't Try this shit, we didnt, we dont know if it works and its FUCKING ILLEGAL." Deicide is pro-satan, however, they don't advocate any of that stuff. Glen Benton just hates god. Vital Remains is also extremely Satanic, but again, its LaVayen "Do what you will and glorify the aspects of life" Satanism and whatnot. So in short, i'm actually a big fan of bands who are serious about satan. Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high, Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie, Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally. Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread Its branches like a Temple overhead. ~Charles Baudelaire http://www.myspace.com/impurity Brutal Skullfucking Death Metal

I thought it was funny how somebody I knew was against Metallica's "The Thing That Shouldn't Be" and I said "I love that song. It has some of my favorite lyrics in a Metallica song." and the person responded, "It's Satanic!" and I laughed, "No, it's not. It's based off of a really cool horror story that was published in 1932 by one of my all-time favorite writers." The guy had never even heard of HP Lovecraft. I wrote a song called "Haunter Of The Dark" that has these really creepy lyrics. If people were like "This song is EVIL!" I'd be like, "What...? You've never read Lovecraft before? My song is pretty literary." 'Course, since it's a really heavy kind of death metal-thrash metal song, most people wouldn't think it could be based off of a story. They'd assume that I'm some demon-worshipping wretch. I don't really see why psyphre is surprised about this. I've known since day one that these people weren't real Satanists. It's not a secret. A lot of the Satanic imagery around Black Sabbath was created by the fans and not the band. I remember arguing with my mom that these people weren't Satan worshippers.

![]() | The movie was extremely enjoyable. On the whole 'Satanic' subject, if ya think about it, the bands that weren't serious about their lyrics are the ones that have done the best (i.e. Venom, Darkthrone, Bathory, etc.). Anymore, the veterans are making a bit of fun about the whole thing. Nocturno and Fenriz from Darkthrone constantly make sarcastic remarks on the subject (along with everything else). Also, during the early/mid 90s, Quorthon of Bathory wanted to 'kill' the 'Satanic baby eater' that everyone thought he was. So he did a grunge/pop sounding solo record (which sounds very kick ass by the way). I know that everyone already said something like this, but this just adds more fuel to the fire I suppose. As for those who were serious at one point (Samoth and Faust of Emperor), they even began to think differently. Ihsahn made that a point in the interview. I have a quick question though, what is up with Gaahl (Gorgoroth)? Does he blink? As far as his belifes...whatever, but I swear he didn't blink once in that interview. He just had that same wided-eyed pscychotic look the entire interview. Gorgoroth is kick ass, but I couldn't help but chuckle at that part. One last thing I'll bring up is the Mr. Vikernes situation. He writes to www.burzum.org about the whole murder/burning thing and gives his view. It's naturally different than what VH1 may make him out to be. Of course, it can't be fully trusted until other parties give their say on Varg and Euronymous, but it's VERY interesting. All in all, cool movie. Just one more quick question. Does ANYBODY know how Ihsahn's name is pronounced? It's driving my a little batty. Later. |

![]() And Slayer isn't false for writing a cool song and using a title like 'God Hates Us All'. Like people go around all day. mumbling to themselves, "Grr! God hates me. He hates you. He hates us all!" C'mon, man. It is a cool title. And I could even intelligently defend the point, that hey! Maybe God does.
