(SPOILER ALERT)

I saw it the other day. It was certainly fun and decently acted, and I liked all the action.

BUT....

Highlight the text below to read it (I know you can still see it but there doesn't seem to be a color that perfectly matches the background, so if you don't want spoilers then skip this stuff):

Upon reflection, did anyone else realize that virtually everything in the entire film could be undone in another sequel with very little writing effort? I mean, the Professor is obviously alive, Magneto is getting his powers back which means the cure doesn't work (negating all the drama about it and making the whole struggle for nothing), and we never see Cyclops die so for all we know he's wandering around in the Canadian wilderness finding his way back. And it would be a simple thing to say that Phoenix was too powerful to be killed by a stab to the chest and have her come back. I like the movie, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't help but feel a little cheated at the end. Everything is already being set up to be undone. It takes away from the impact of killing these major characters and having the big struggle, because none of it was permanent or ultimately FOR anything. Kind of feels like a cop out, like the ultimate play-it-safe movie where nothing that happens, no matter how shocking or emotional, actually counts and it can all be undone.

I don't know how to do the fancy formatting stuff...so...

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AS THIS CONTINUES FROM THE ABOVE POST!!!

That's because the movie is based on the comic books and nothing seems to be forever in comic books. Go to wikipedia and look through the character profiles/story lines;

wolverine for example loses his powers, gains them, gets his memories back, loses them, has the adamentium ripped from his bones, has it replaced, goes crazy again, goes sane etc etc etc. I see what you're saying about feeling kinda cheated but within the fun of comic books and so on I expected it during the movie.

I saw it last night and enjoyed it despite a few continuity/consistency errors.

My response below: \/

I understand that, I've read about it online since the movie came out. But the movies have put aside some of the more juvenile things in the comics (such as spandex and magic and such) in, I assume, an effort to be more adult. When someone is writing a comic strip or television show, one of the challenges is to have conflict and struggle and change without so drastically changing the characters in such a way that the story line would stop. The flip side to this is the knowledge that nothing that happens in the course of an episode (or comic) will ever be TOO bad or permanent, which totally undermines the drama. Films are generally free from such constraints, or at least don't have to keep things safe for nearly as long, which allows the makers to do more drastic things. And knowing that no one is safe is part of the fun and the excitement, and lends more weight to everything that happens.

I know the comics did it and that TV does it all the time, but I was hoping they'd leave that behind for the films and handle things a little more seriously. Personally I'm going to get bored with the series if it just turns into a big budget TV series where you know going in that no matter what happens, in the end the heroes are all going to be fine, even if it takes some ridiculous writing. I don't mind characters getting out of bad situations in unlikely ways, that's just a staple of action films. But killing them off willy nilly and then bringing them back, taking their powers away and bringing them back, etc., is just lame and takes away from the credibility of the film. I know they're walking a thin line trying to satisfy the fanboys and still make something that will appeal to more people, but in order to make a good, effective, moving and emotional film there has to be more consequence to things and I personally think they'd be better off going against the fanboys on this one. Just me though, the film is making crazy amounts of money so that speaks for itself. Maybe I just had too high of expectations based on the first two.
