They're quite rounded. The graphite on mine has a perfect "unfinished wood" kind of texture which I love. I like thinner necks and a much wider string spacing personally.

There's no reason for it not to work just as well as the calibrated double-ball strings. The trick is to experiment with where you clamp the nut-ends of each string so that when you tune up the bridge ends are in the same pattern as calibrated strings would be. There are pics of this pattern on steinbergerworld.com.

Currently I've just got my trans-trem adjusted so the standard and down 1 whole-step settings stay in tune, but I intend to get all 6 settings working when I have time.
