8 pedals is not bad. I guess the Whammy is only useful for when you need the Epi as the backup
And hell yeah, if eventually I get the money, I'd love to .... with singular pedals for some crazy experimentation too, but for now I'm broke
The Axe FX is a supreme live option (although it relies on a good PA system though).
When I saw Meshuggah, they used Axe FX for guitars and a POD XT Pro for bass.
Their live sound absolutely crushed the previous two bands that opened for them that used real amps and cabs on stage.
It just ensured that in a relatively small venue, that there was zero possibility of sound bleeding into the mic from the amps, which leads to a cleaner on stage sound.
However, I've yet to hear convincing evidence that the Axe FX is good for that kinda groove/thrash saturated sound we dig. I swear even the Line 6 stuff is superior for that, whereas the Axe FX seems to have superior articulation for "djent".

Me think that's perhaps 8 is a little overboard on the gain though. The XXX is definitely a super saturated beast. Did you try out 7 on the gain first? Seeing as you're already pushing the front end via the TS, I'm sure 7 will be plenty.

Which pedals are getting the boot?
Now you're starting to realize I was only half joking when I said to either use less pedals or get a MIDI system , huh ?
The TS and delays are obvious essentials, but I'm thinking you definitely don't need any octave effects, because to be honest I seriously don't think anyone is going to notice that you wouldn't be using one anymore.

And damn, tell Danny to get a TS-7. They're fairly cheap and they push the front end in a very effective way that I don't think the onboard boost does.
The TS style boost which rolls off the highs and increases the core mids will easily enhance the perception of his guitar rig sound at a live show.

So what were the original settings you used?
Welcome to the heaps of gain club.
For a while I was like "YEAH MAN LESS GAIN!" but .... it, I ended up just loving the compression and sustain of more gain, plus the palm mutes just have a ....ing sexy chunk to them that less gain just doesn't do.
The downside is with so much gain is that your mistakes are amplified because string noise becomes more apparent

Well of course I wasn't saying buy a new cab ASAP Definitely somewhere down the track consider some options.
As for the D-Sonic, I'm only really clued up as to how it voices with basswood, not so much mahogany.
At least with the D-Activators you have a known quantity.

Also, just been giving the album a spin on the CD, goddamn, definitely mastered a little too loud for my tastes and unfortunately I think the audio quality suffers a little as a result too.
I'm definitely not one of those super anti loudness freaks by any stretch of the imagination (A LOT of the stuff I listen to it is quite loudly mastered) but there tends to be a certain loudness threshold where I prefer it wont exceed.
Basically I like loud, but I don't like clipping loud.
I'm almost certain I'm hearing a little bit of audible clipping on the album, which is unfortunate.

As much as a pickup change is cool, I think a far better investment would be either to ditch the XXX and buy a used JSX ( I Know I know, "SHUT UP HARRY!" but I do strongly believe they have a nicer sounding voicing overall and a better clean channel), or sell the Peavey cab, save up a little and score a used Recto Oversize 4x12. I'd think either of those upgrades would make a more significant difference than a pickup change.
Also consider that a change like that will also enhance the sound of ALL your guitars, whereas a pickup change only affects one instrument.

FWIW, you handled the situation pretty well.
Some people probably would have lost their cool entirely but you handled it like a pro

Yeah I noticed the Randalls really don't voice that well with your Peavey.
I don't know so much about live situations, but I always rant and rave about the Boogie Rectifier Standard 4x12 Oversize cabs because those things just seem to voice insanely well for not only Mesas, but pretty much all the high gain Peavey range.
There's a reason why you see a lot of guys running the JSX, XXX and 5150 heads with the Boogie cab instead of the Peavey cab and it's just because ironically the competitions head voices better with those amps than Peavey's own cab does.

Shit son, when you gonna be online again?
Hopefully you'll be on sometime today.
Tomorrow's gonna be a hectic day. Got a funeral in the morning, but that will definitely finish in the early arvo, so no doubt I can still make it to the gig
Just wondering what time you'll be there.
You guys got any idea how long your set list will be?
