Planck is finished.

I finished him up pretty much. A little thing here or there and shes completely finished(i forgot to put the brass tubing side dots, so i still have that to do.Hence the badass masking tape sidedots ).
But hes basically playable and finished.

Claro walnut top and neck
Honduran mahogany body
Birdseye maple fretboard
Set neck
Steinberger tuners
Nashville TOM bridge
Full 2 inch thick body
Duncan Distortion and Jazz
24.6'' Scale

That is one thick body but damn does that look good. Even with the masking tape on for now.

Its wider than normal. Its really in the medium thickness range. I like a bigger neck. I'v had wrist problems in the past and find that the bigger the neck, the better. I think having my hand in a wider, more open grip is really the reason, but over the years as i'v raised my guitar up and went with more ergonomic amenities, things have gotten better to the point that its not really an issue.

Well done Chris! I'm immensely enjoying the pickup color scheme and the bindings on this build. Perfect accents that make all the difference!

Love that walnut/maple color scheme - pretty sure my next guitar will go that route as well. (Or walnut/hickory, which is not too far off.) Well done, sir!

I'v never heard of anyone using hickory. That would be awesome. I almost got a pistashio top for my other build(hubble), but the flamed redwood got me, but i did get a board of wild olive tree wood for the neck.

I love using unconventional materials/uncommonly used woods for my builds.

And thanks guys, it really means a lot to me

I'm in ....ing love with this thing. I shaved down the neck today to final thickness/profile. It feels great. The 24.6 scale is lovely. This is my only guitar that actually makes me want to play the unwound strings. The chords and highs just leap off this thing. It sounds so clean and the notes all have a even response across the chords/board.
I think the combo of the thicker body (2 in) and the slightly thicker neck coupled with this shorter scale are making a difference in the clarity and body of the sound.
Its like a reincarnation of my first les paul. It really fills a niche I didnt have.
Heres a couple shots i was ....ing with while i was oozing auditory sex with it. (I'l make some clips asap).
I'm really proud of myself on this one. Looks great, and more importantly, it sounds great.

I think that not having a seperated thick fretboard slab adds to the illusion of being a bit thicker necked. Looks thinner when put in context with the hand.
Very unique, and could also double as wooden war hammer if the crowd gets out of line.

In all honesty, It looks like you tore apart an old dining room set and used one of the legs as a fretboard.

Anyways, it sure does look pretty awesome! But that neck just looks gigantic. A glorified baseball bat right there haha.

People keep saying that, but its just really not Its a touch thicker than my other guitars necks, but it not difficult to play or crazy big or anything. It makes it just have a full thick sound. I have a few other guitars with thicker/bigger necks and they sound fuller and better than my other guitars. I made the coralation that a fatter neck makes for better tone, and its seeming to be true. This guitar is inline with the others and sounds great.

Its like playing with high action v low action. You can put it low and get lots of buzz and a shittier tone, but its easier to play. Or you can put the action high and get a better string vibration and clairity/tone, but its harder to play. You want to meet in the middle(at least i do) and i do the same with neck profile. I'm also not a little guy, so I like something biger in my hands.

Rick Toone's done a few instruments with hickory fretboards. My idealized next build is an ash body with a walnut top, red oak neck, and hickory fretboard. Still debating over whether it will be a 7 or an 8; it may depend on what Tom decides for the next OAF group build.
