CHOP CHOP! Carved top ibanez project

In preparation for an entire build, I wanted to see how well I can do a carved top. I have an rg7321 I dont use very much, and the shape is less then inspiring!

So... I chopped it up! Tried chiseling it out, but that failed, so I just went to town with some 40 grit sandpaper and a nice powered rotary sander.

I also cut the treble side horn a bit to make it more "fluid", sculpted the heel for a COMFORTABLE transition, not just a block of wood in the way. Don't worry, I just applied some primer to see where any imperfections lie, so its just something my anal-ness compells me to do. I think the carve came out pretty nice, and the shorter treble horn seems to balanced nicely (in my opinion, criticism [positive OR negative] ALWAYS welcome).

"big picture", the headstock will be painted to match.


Closer image, ignore the discoloration, its simply where sanding sealer remained intact, so it stuck out better.


Back side, you can see the contouring on the heel. Obviously sanded back and not near finishing.

Thanks man, the pictures dont really do the carve justice, as the color seems to bleed it out. The lines are very sharp.

this is my inspiration for the curves, obviously not any kind of exact by any means, but I like the look.

Hmm. What color do you suggest then? I think black pearl would look sharp. And my ibanez is now completely unique. No other ibanez on the planet will look like this one, so I fail to see how color makes it "another" black Ibanez.

Perhaps you missed my white js build too lol.

I say go with a nice metal flake orange anything pearlescent or with metal flakes would look great and take advantage of light hitting that carved top

How it was meant to come out is "too many black ibanezes" I did miss the white build. But what im saying is use a color no one has before. make it truely unique. Like one of a kind, in the whole world.

I have some alsa paints floating around, however they are pearl black and spectra fx colors.

I'll see about orange or red pearl. Im NOT doing a flake paint job though... I think its cool, but its not for this build.

So I got to the store with all intentions of going black pearl... until this color caught my eye... its not orange, but it kinda fits the bill.

Still not finished with the body, got a lot of work to go there. This color should look outstanding with black hardware imo.

Its a LOT more "shiney" then it appears. Looks like liquid metal when I sprayed it O.o

Its not though, thats just the color! The paint went on pretty flat actually, not much to level sand when it cures!

Very nice colour! I think a black decal would go well with the hardware. Is it more red or orange in person? I know getting the real colour to show in pics can be a pain in the ass.

Its WAY more red then it appears. I am using black hardware, so I dont want the decal to "Clash". Perhaps a chrome decal O.o

In all honesty, this is the color in person except its pearl finish, not satin based.

I'd say black. It will definitely pop next to the color of the finish and it will be easy to locate matching hardware.

Edit: if you go black you could just re-use the same hardware (i might be wrong but don't rg7321's tyoically have black hardware). I mean if you wanna go all out you could swap out the tuners and bridge as I'm sure they are not amazing (not saying they are shitty, but lets face it, some hipshot tuners and bridge will probably be a cut above) but atleast you will have the knob and switch situation covered

Ill do a quasi mock up of the tuners tonight to let you see how it goes with the black hardware.

Its an older 7321, so it doesnt have that wierd gibraltar bridge. And yes, all black.

Actually I think Im gonna get some white dimarzio 7's for a "Contrast" color!
