Feedback on two bodys for 7str build
Hello good people of ss.org! I am working on mockups for my next custom build - a super-strat 7 str. I've drawn two bodies, that I really like, and now I've lost that critical eye on things and need your help.
Which do you prefer - or better - which seems the better overall looking guitar? I am going for balance and a speedy look, and I want the body to have its weight on the lower part, to compensate for a heavy neck/headstock. Body will be made from ancient kauri (weight very close to honduras mahogony) and the neck will be a 3-piece set-thru with a 3x4 headstock. I'l slab a nice piece of figured bubinga on top of the body. Macassar ebony fretboard. With that info, let me know what you think ![]()

I like the custom 1 body. But I'd cut that horn a little deeper for better feet access and to have the horn cuts mimic the slant of the back of the body.
Also props for taking the time to create a scaled, good looking sketch. I hate when people scan a pencil sketch all out of scale, eraser marks everywhere, and ask for an opinion. |

i prefer custom body 1, but i think it would look alot better if you did a full scale mockup

castom 1 body reminds me of the Broderick's Jacks signature http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/bla...e/brodnew1.jpg
which I do not like... So i like your castom 2 |

I like the first one best. That is, number 2. I think the other one's ass is a little too flat (which is also the one thing I dislike about the Broderick). I'm more of a curve-appreciator.

+1 on number 1.
I think Hollowway makes a good point though, the fret access would be a lot easier with some modifications to the design of the lower horn, "You took the best thing about natural finished guitar bodies and applied it to the neck. I'd compare it to dipping solid chocolate into chocolate mousse, having a lucid dream within a dream, receiving fellatio while having sex, producing energy while burning no fuel. You sir are a genius.'' - in-pursuit "Parker PM 10 trade?" - JackWilliamBellow |

Number 1
Number 2 looks to have too much of a bulge for my liking, some reworking of the lines may help but it looks unbalanced to the rest of the body. And we paid the price, we paid for their crimes with our blood. |

I want feet access too, like Holloway. Playing w/ your feet = epic stage trick.
![]() But yes, access to all frets is essential. That said I like the overall shape of the #2 "... and on either side of the river was the tree of life. The leaves of this tree were for the healing of nations." "He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle and the herb for the service of man." "Lifes too short to hate Floyd Roses." |

definitely number one. Though the asymmetrical design is pretty cool, it just doesn't look that great in reality in my opinion

Custom 1, but different positioning of the controls
And I'd probably extend the body a bit further out for extra weight. |

I'm gonna vote for Custom 1, possibly with a deeper lower horn cutaway.

Wow - thanks! I hadn't expected that amount of feedback. Pretty cool! I've so far decided to work with the custom 1 (which I for brainfart reasons put as the second guitar on the first mockup - sry). I realize the body looks somewhat like the broderick - I like the asymetrical look of it - looks fast.
What have i changed on this mockup? 1) I have fiddled a bit with the neck and lower horn heel - better fret access ftw. (I tried to have it mimic the butt end shape, without any obviously nice results) 2) I have enhanced the binding, to make it stand out on the mockup - I am going for cream - or perhaps even gold-colored abelone. 3) I have given it some colours! 4) I've added some inlay - just to see if it would work, or if it seems out of place. Dunno yet. 5) I have changed, very slightly, the upper horn and the butt end arc. Likely not noticeable on these pics here ![]() 6) I've added a headstock "logo" to check out what it'll look like. So what's next? I am feeling up for gold hardware - it brings out the warm glow of the woods I've chosen. I might just go for std color - not considering going black. Any comments are very welcome - even if I don't go with your perfectly reasonable views, I am grateful for them. Any - here's the mockup v.2! Cheers! ![]() |

If i were you...
i would use natural binding. Either ''faux'' or flame maple binding around the body and around the neck and headstock. also, i would leave the fretboard blank or maybe put off-set dots or a mark of some sort (see esp horizon) the inlay looks awesome, but i would use it on the headstock as your trademark then again that's just me AWESOME mockup btw And gold hardware ftw

I think the most recent mockup looks nice. The evenly spaced frets are weirding me out though lol

I second this, possibly have the brand name in it as well. The guitar design itself looks great.
