What... the... mother... fu**...!!!!!!!

Long story short, I want to block off the tremolo recess of a guitar I have. I sent it to a friend to route for me, because he said he was very familiar with routing. He returned it today saying he guesses he wasn't as skilled as he thought.

WTF?!?! Seriously, dude... seriously?

Can I even salvage this? What can I do?

Well, here is the original post I made of my project guitar:
http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/lut...mpossible.html

That's how it started out.

Apparently, this is how it's abruptly ending.

It's a piece of crap Dean Vendetta 2.0 with the camouflage finish. I figured I'd use it as my first project guitar and make it into something worthwhile.

you could do this! how about taking a blowtorch to it torch everywhere that he routed to give it a chared cornered look. lightly burn the rest but dont char it like the routes, then use some tung oil for a natural finish. the burning will make the bad routing look really cool and the little bit of burning on the rest of the body will tie it all in

Well, I wasn't really set on this guitar. It was a piece of crap that very quickly fell apart on me after I bought it, so I thought, "Let's make this into my first project guitar."

I'd really like to salvage this one, if it's even possible.

I'm fairly bummed right now.

At any rate, thank you very much for the offer, as that is very kind of you.

LOL. Well, you may have an idea there. This may end up as firewood this winter.

Nonetheless, is there anything I can do to salvage this?

you wanted to block off the recess right? then why the hell was he routing!? wood filler yo

EDIT: second thought no amount of filler will fix such a fail ... Try making a wooden block as close to the same size as the hole and glue it in with shit loads of glue - but mix in some wood dust into the glue so the glue will dry like wood. its what they do for inlays on fretboards and it works great

other than that i say burn it

glad to hear it!!

to OP, one way you could do it REALLY cheap but it will be messy.

go to a wood chop and ask them if they sell they saw dust and if they have real rough saw dust.

mix that saw dust with some glue until you get some kind of paste then apply the paste to the "mess area" and fashion it so that it takes the shape needed.

the usual sanding, blah blah blah..it won't be nice, but it will be cheap and way easier to ensure that the "messy area" is properly filled in, because as it is now you will have one hell of a job to get a 1 piece of wood to fit in it.

Because he's an idiot, and apparently, so am I. He told me had done several project guitars before, and that in order to block off the tremolo, he had to route out a square hole to glue wood blocks into.

I'm not really particularly good with wood work. I can sand, and that's about it. I don't know much about it, either. I was hoping to learn with this guitar.

After listening to him, I priced some routers with a proper table to route on, and they're fairly expensive. He said he knew what he was doing, so I figured I'd save myself the expense.

Find somebody that actually knows what the hell they're doing with a router to square up that mess, cut a block of wood to fit hole, glue in place, filler cracks, sand.

Incoming
It's a surprise

Yea, after looking at this further, it almost looks like I'm better off if I just cut all the way through the body. The remaining wood separating the top of the tremolo recess from the bottom is maybe millimeters thick now.

Well, on the bright side, I probably won't find something I give a shit less about to learn how to route on than this abomination.

I guess it's time to actually spend the money and learn how to do a little wood work.

Yea, I am trying to debate between doing this and actually learning how to do some sort of wood working.

I'm so discouraged right now that I don't want to do anything!!

LOL!! Absolutely, I saw the pictures, and thank you for posting those.

The problem is, I was hoping to still salvage it somewhat, because I had an idea for a cool finish I wanted to put on it. I don't think I could still do that if I burned it?

you could, block the ENTIRE front,, sand, and finish. then put a trem on it like the one in the pic on my patriot! then just put a block in the back to "block it off" or "lock it" and put a cover on the back

I'm trying to visualize what you mean, as it sounds interesting?

I was hoping to put a just simply Schaller fixed bridge on it.

just block the whole front and put a fixed on it. then block the entire back and finish mix the wood glue with the sawdust from the blocks you cut to make a filler for the gaps that the shoddy routing job will make with the sides of your block

Is there any chance that he is good with a router... but just hates you?

If that's not the case, I'd show him pictures of a router and an air chisel, then see if he can point out which is which.
