Serious Advice Needed on Job
I need your advice and opinion on this.
Long story short, I now have this office job with damn good office hours, 5-day work week and load of time to surf the net while at work. However, the salary is just so-so. It doesn't pay bad, but I thought I deserve at least $200 - 300 more per month. And before I got this office job I was working at a TV station as an master control operator for almost 7 years. In fact, my degree is in TV production. (do not major in that if you are entering college now ) Anyway, 2 months ago I was granted an interview by Turner here in Hong Kong thru a friend's friend. The job is pretty much the same thing of what I used to do. The first interview went so well, it feels like I was getting the job. But then the second interview didn't come until a month later (they claimed the HR manager was on leave), and somehow they gave me this weird vibes; and I thought there is no way in hell they would offer me the job. So, now, almost 3 weeks later since the 2nd interview, I am kind of curious about what is up with them, and I called them up this morning. This time the HR guy told me the job is more or less mine, they are only now waiting for their HR Dept to settle some document and all. Ok, my questions are: - Prospect is a big thing, and IF they offer me the job, and IF I take it; chances are I can pretty much forget about going to another industry ever again. Is it worth giving up what I do now and do something that I went to school for at this point? (at least I think if I stay put, it would be easier for me to land another office position. After all, I am now in the so-called business sector) - Salary is another issue. I love my current job, and what I do, but the only reason why I wanted to leave my current job is the salary, and as I mentioned I firmly believe I deserve up to $300 per month. So let's say if Turner offer me what I wanted now, would you guy still leave for the Turner job? Or would you stay and try to convince your boss on a raise?

Whats the Turner job like? Work hours etc. Any benefits and so forth...
5 days a week is pretty damn good for a Hong Kong job. :P Personally, i'd stay on the office job and try and get a raise yeah. ![]() |

The Turner job is also a master control job mainly to deal with the Asian HBO and Cartoon Network... the hours sucks, though. It is 8:30 to 8:30 (12 hours). You basically work two days in a row and have the next two days off. Also, you basically do the day shift for two weeks before switching to night for two weeks and so forth. So if you do the maths, you are basically working "6 days" a week hour-wise...
All other benefit is similar to almost any other US company. Paid holidays, insurance etc. |

I don't like your kind. I hate anyone who kills chords because of their simpleness and lack of extensions. It was you and oyur kind who got rid of B# and E# and their respective major, minor, diminished, and augmented chords. You sir, are a danger to music.

Well, Azyiu. I quit my previous job almost 3 years ago for a huge pay cut and, after several raises, I still don't make as much as I made 3 years ago (but not by much), but I hated that job. That job was pure hell. I dreaded going to sleep Sunday nights because Monday morning was the scariest thing in the world. I would stay up until 4 or 5am just because I didn't want to go to bed, since sleep would mean waking up to my job. I have never had that experience with my current job. I enjoy what I'm doing (translation at a video game company). I prefer where I live (Tokyo. Wouldn't have had a chance in hell of finding members for a band like I have now where I used to live or even for a metal band period - or even a hard rock band). When I go to bed on Sunday night now, I just think, "Hey, now that I think about it, I've got work tomorrow. Coo'." And all that junk.
And those hours suck. So I would say "no." Personally. Quote:

my advice:
imo it's positive that Turner let you wait, so you can let them wait in the future... If you want to remain where you are, once Turner tells you if they want to hire you have to let them wait a bit, then I'd personally go to your current employer and tell him that you like what you do but you need a few things (300$ and maybe some other things you don't like), be sure to don't tell him you have another offer, it's obvious and it's not a good idea to blackmail the one that decide to give you a raise. If they don't give you those 300$ raise they simply don't trust you, ad you can go to Turner, else you can remain where you are... |
