He had this song written back in '84?

Eric Johnson performing Manhattan live at Austin City Limits 4 years before his other performance in 1988. Seems like a rough version judging by the solo. Still, cool though. Check it out.

Also, the opening of his instructional video for those of you who haven't seen it-

Nice. I actually dig that first link a lot. \m/

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

You know, you could tell this song was still up in the air by his solo. It sounds as though he is improvising it right on the spot. What I also noticed is he doesn't do a solo at the end. Compared to any other live recording of Manhattan especially the live at Zona Rosa, TX '97 version, this one isn't that great. Still, cool though-the fact that he had the song written back then, amazing.

Cool find, Shawn! I never knew that song was kicking around for so long. I like the solo on the album better, but it's still cool hearing an early version of this very cool tune. Thanks!

No prob, Pete. By the way, the solo IS awesome. I learned the whole song entirely about 3 years ago and still play it to this day but one thing that gets me is how the hell did he write that solo, he may of even have had it written back then. The studio version of Manhattan owns all especially the solos.

Who the hell is that drummer? It may be Billy Maddox (Electromagnets, Alien Love Child). I know for sure that is Kyle Brock on bass.

By the way Eric was born in 1954 so he would've been 30 back then. Almost my age.

I dont tink it's Tommy Taylor. Tommy Taylor played with him during the '88 performance and pretty much all his studio albums and music videos.

My guess is Billy Maddox. It would make sense for it to be Tommy Taylor though. But if you notice this clip from 1974, it's The Electromagnets and that is Billy Maddox on drums. Any resemblance? Hard to tell.
