Audition tips......
Anybody have any? I've got a few auditions set up over the next couple of weeks and want any suggestions you guys have. I've only done 1 or 2 auditions before, normally I start up a band and somehow the rest of the band just falls into place. Thanks

Be professional. Be on time, know the material be in tune when you show up, set up quickly, and do whatever it is the band wants you to.
Also remember that you're auditioning the band as much as they're auditioning you - if nothing else, that can help your confidence. ![]()

+1. When i auditioned for Division, my drums where in another state... plus up to that point, i was only jamming Cream and bluesy stuff every month or so with my bro-in-law.... and before that, it was just punk music! long story short... i showed up, un-practiced, and not in the best shape... but i was on-time and I knew the material enough to easily get through the songs w/o ever getting lost or having to stop. did i nail them? no. but i hit the changes with confidence, which allowed me to 'get into it.' Show them you want it by demonstrating that you took the time to learn the songs and the original parts. what can really set you apart is learning the band's non-audition songs. you'll surprise them and break the monotony of auditions. this will show them how good your ear is. So, yeah, if you do that, make it a surprise. you'll make it fun for them and they'll see that you're really into their music. |

The wost people I've auditioned were people who didnt really learn the material. They showed up expecting a "jam" situation after giving them 2 cd's worth of material, and could not have been more wrong. if a person does not have the disipline to learn your material berfore auditioning it's such a waste of time. I'd just send them home and tell them to come back when they were ready. So yea do your homework but be yourself but make sure you really are into their stuff as well.

The obverse is true for a band, of course - at the local level, it's unrealistic to expect a new member to learn two CD's worth of material for an audition. If you're a national act getting ready to tour or something, that's one thing, but if not, well, three songs is about standard - enough to see if the guy has what it takes, without wasting his (or your) time if it doesn't click for both parties.

Luckily, the material shouldn't be too tough. One band is a hard rock cover band. They just sent me a few easy songs to learn. The other one is a startup that only has 1 or 2 songs written and they basically just want to hang out a bit and jam.
Should I bring booze for the band? I know if it were Drew or Chris's band, if I didn't bring some good liquor, they'd just until I finally left in shame ![]() * nitelightboy wouldn't actually bring booze to an audition. Wouldn't want to waste good alcohol if things don't vibe. ![]() |
