Metallica at Wembley Stadium last night

Me and Monkeybassguru went to see the 'Tallica at Wembley last night. Support came from Mastodon (who were better than I expected, although they were shot in the foot by the soundman), Machine Head (who we missed due to being stuck in a queue for the cash machine) and HIM (who were almost comically amateurish and absolutely bombed with the audience).
Metallica were on good form. They played a pretty decent mix of songs (meaning only 'The Memory Remains' and 'No-leaf Clover' from their recent albums), and the band were generally on fine form. Rob Trujillo had a pretty cool bass solo leading into 'Orion', and the mix was great compared to the support acts. Kirk Hammet was the only one who really suffered in the mix, and generally sounded buried by the other instruments, most of his solos sounding like a bunch of wah-enhanced squeals to the audience. His vibrato still grates on me, but I won't go there right now...
Overall, it was a great show, and there was a pretty good atmosphere in the audience, despite a few assholes (chavs in football shirts who probably weren't even aware who they'd come to see) who seemed determined injure as many people as possible. However, it did bring home the fact that Metallica have reached that horrible point in their career where they're just kinda 'there' as opposed to being particularly inspirational. Everyone knows their songs inside out, and knows that they'll execute them perfectly onstage, but how many of us really care enough to go out and buy a new album if one surfaces?

Dreaming in infared...

No idea. The standing area was packed, but there were still plenty of vacant seats.

I remember when Metallica was THE ticket, when they were coming near by it was a huge party...hasn't been that way for about a dozen years now

Sounds like the Tool concert last night. The whole 2 hour drive there, every place we stopped at was flooded with people in Tool shirts on their way there, and the city itself was overrun by Tool fans. Every street, every patio, everything was full of Tool fans. And when the show let out, the crowds leaving the building blocked off streets in all directions. And there were people in Tool shirts at all the stops on the way home too.
