Instrumental band performances
i have another question in regards to instrumental band performances. what would a person do if he/she is the sole guitar/bass/drum programmer of a project and wants to gig at some clubs? hire some temporary musicians or just take some computer equipment to play the bass and drums parts? the latter seems the best but i was just wondering what some of you sole musicians do when you play gigs with your instrumental stuff that is written and played only by you.

Personally I think it's worth investing the time to find other players who are into your music, and teach them the parts so you can play as a full band.
From the audience point of view, I'd way rather see a full band playing than one person with backing tracks - I'd rather just listen to a recording than watch one person pretending to be a full band. my 2¢ |

Ditto - you can certainly do it with backing tracks, but it's WAY more fun to actually be on stage with a few more musicians.
If starting a "band" is tough, then you can always think of it as a hired gun sort of thing - just pay them a set amount for rehearsals and gigs. Most drummers are already in a couple bands and are a little leery of "starting a band" on the side, but taking a gig for some extra cash is a different story altogether.

ok. i think what i meant when i said just having backing tracks was for the money side of things. but after reading the post, it definitely would be more fun to see a full band than just one person playing. i really shouldn't worry about the money from the gigs and just worry about having fun and stuff. the money will come later. maybe not much, but some. and that's fine. i'd rather have fun at a gig anyways. that's what a fulltime job is for i guess. i would put a thanked thing on your post, but i can't seem to figure it out right now. kinda doing 2/3/4/5/6 things at once. thanks for the advice!!

I agree with Ahab... sorry - Drew...
It may be a bit of extra bother to rehearse a band in for a gig, but the first impression you make may score you more gigs, so it's worth it in the long run. I'm just rehearsing a live band myself after recording a 'solo' solo album, and the satisfaction of hearing a 'real' band play my stuff is awesome. I use backing tracks for clinics and the like, but to present a full-on rock show, nothing beats bodies on stage. Go for it, and enjoy! ![]()
Next to silence, that which comes closest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

I've been in that boat...
Honestly, try your hardest to find members. MySpace is a great tool for this, but also use CraigsList and whatnot. Going to see a live show with just one dude would be incredibly boring for me, and for most people, I think. Hell, most of the time, it's boring without a singer, let alone without a drummer, bassist, other guitarist, etc... |
