Pulse monitor for cardio

Hey, anyone here into doing cardio, what would you recommend for a heart rate monitor? We just got an elliptical and the pulse monitor on it sucks donkey dick. I'm doing a quick search on ebay, and I'm guessing the ones for $8.50 from China probably aren't going to work that well. Are they pricey for ones that work? Do those watches with the monitor on it work at all or do you need to get the ones with a chest strap?

Kinda OT, I just ran 18 km, I did a lot better than I thought I would for not having exercised really in over a year and a half, and only recently (well, November) quitting smoking
