Self Heating Coffee/Latte/Cocoa?

So, my parents went to Wal-mart,
and brought back this self-heating Cocoa for me and a french vanilla latte for my brother because I hate coffee.

I was like woah, how does that work?
It probably doesn't even taste that good.

So I followed the directions:
You have to push a button on a bottom that drains some green water into the "heating chamber" which heats it up after 5-8 minutes.

I drank some, and it was probably the best hot chocolate I've ever had.

Anyone else have something like this?

I was just thinking yesterday I needed one of those self cooling Beers I saw on Beyond Tomorrow years ago when I realised I had no cold ones in the fridge.

I dunno about that blanket statement. I've had a salisbury steak MRE which tasted like what I imagine luke-warm ass would taste like, but the turkey dinners and vegetarian MREs aren't bad.

How fucking lazy do people have to be to buy self-heating beverages?

You know it only takes 2 minutes to boil water in a microwave, right? Why would you use some bizarre and likely toxic chemical reaction to do the same thing in 5-8 minutes?

Now, i could see some limited application for something like this in emergency situations, but as an everyday thing? Come on. You can't be serious.

The ones I saw demonstrated had the process occur in a separate sealed compartment, the elements that were combined were natural, biodegradable and totally non toxic and the purpose of the self heating and self cooling beverage was so that it could be enjoyed somewhere that it would be impossible or inconvenient to prepare such as camping or fishing on a boat.

Obviously I only saw one companies products featured and there would most likely be others that were completely different to what I have described.

These taste pretty good, but are a bit of a rip off. $2 for what's really about 9oz of coffee/cocoa.

I think it's a neat idea, just implemented poorly. I would use the heating idea with those Campbell's soup at hand things, or other crappy canned food(chef boy-ar-dee anyone?). Sometimes you don't have access to a microwave, or cooking equipment, like at work.

Okay, just because MREs taste bad doesn't mean everything that's heated that way has to...

And don't make me feel any worse about stocking up on them in case the elves attack again. You might do well to do the same... attacking elves are serious business.
