Ulnar Nerve Injuries

Hey y'all,

I recently injured my left wrist, causing what the docs believe is an ulnar nerve entrapment. I was taking it easy and not using my left hand very much and then I managed to quickly snatch up my backpack, forgetting that I had a heavy power amp in it and completely fucked up my right wrist with the same ulnar nerve entrapment.

So now it's kinda hard to type, playing guitar is 100% impossible and I can't do a damn thing on my guitar builds. I've been getting differnet recovery times from 3 different doctors (2 weeks, a month, a year) but I haven't been able to talk to anyone who actually has had this injury.

It's been about 2 weeks and I'm able to type with two fingers on each hand and it doesn't feel like someone is trying to rip every vein and muscle out of my arm anymore. Has anyone else had this injury? I'd love to hear from other guitar players about this.

Check it out here for a little more info.

Thanks Sebastien! I'm confident I'll recover from this in due time, it's just driving me mental.

I forgot to mention that I'm seeing a hand specialist (EMG testing)and a neurologist next week.

Sorry to hear that. Hands are real nasty when they get hurt, we use them way too much... Hope you get well soon.

Just listen to the docs for now

I've got an ulnar nerve issue in my left hand that prevents me from playing seven-stringed guitars at all because of the wider neck and seriously compromised my ability to play a six string. Mine is damaged at the wrist, though.

I have the same issue right now, the only guitar I can play at the moment is my carvin. I was recovering well after a couple weeks, so I started playing again and it is starting to act up again. I can play without too much trouble but playing songs filled with barred chords really sucks the life out of my left hand.

I haven't played my 7 since and I really miss it.

edit mine is running from my fingers to my elbow, in varying degrees of discomfort. sometimes hardly anything to full on burning/stinging the entire length....I really just need to stop playing for a while and let it heal up....but I'm a programmer so that arm/wrist gets worked everyday anyways

Dude, that's IDENTICAL to what's I've got goin down and I feel with you - it's fucking awful. It comes and goes now and I *think* it's getting better, but now i'm unsure if it's the nerves or muscle atrophy. Still waiting on a bloody hand specialist......

I picked up a pair of wrist braces (local drugstore type) that isolate the hand movement that causes the pain to get really bad. I can go about 12 hours without my right wrist in the brace now, but the left is still a mess.

I had a stretched/bruised nerve in my arm, and was out for 3 months, and by then I was able to play (despite muscular atrophy and not fully healed). Damnit it sucks.

Yeah I had it, and it was cured by visits to the physio who massaged my neck and shoulders - 'everything is connected' and gave me an exercise to do that invovled putting my hands 'thumb up' over my eyes, as if I was looking through binoculars

I've found the biggest thing to help me to to wrap my wrist before I go to bed...I guess I must twist it around a bunch or put it in awkward angles when I sleep.

I think I'm in the muscle atrophy stage. I can play my sixers but anything over an hour causes it to act up again.

Hope all you guys start feeling better
