Does anybody have any advice/opinions on this?
I'm currently working on getting my picking technique up to snuff - meaning, concentrating a lot on relaxation. But at the same time, I'm thinking about starting up a weights routine again. I've noticed that lifting weights seems to lead to a lot of tension in my arms. in other words: != ???

Nah, well maybe for an hour or so after you get done you'll be tense.
I do some heavy lifting every other day and nothing beats relieveing tension than playing some guitar after I get back from the gym. For me at least. Maybe try an ice bath if you're really working hard.

do you stretch after you lift?
I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate. We'll cross the streams. |

No I haven't been.
I suppose I should look into that Any particular routines I should look at? I started playing about an hour after I got done with weights today, and my picking hand was definitely sucking. But about 3 hours later, I actually was able to get a sequence up about 5 bpm faster than I've ever done before... I guess the tension does get worse, but its only temporary. |

MY GOD MAN!!! Stretch after you work out (and before, but more carefully). It's just stupid not to!

yeah, you can really injure yourself if you don't stretch. and by the way, you should be stretching before long guitar playing sessions as well!

Stretching is the key.
I lift every other day and if I know I'm going to be playing that day I make sure I stretch out my shoulders and forearms as best as I can before I sit down to play. If I do any arm work I usually wait a couple of hours for my arms to recover before I play otherwise I just suck. look at Chris Broderick, he lifts and I think he can kind of 'shred the shit out of a guitar" ![]()
Can I be the devil on your shoulder?

Get yourself a really good book on stretching, do it before and after. And make sure you eat really well, not just a shit ton of meat. But alot of vitamins and nutrients, lentils are a good secret. They contain so much potassium it helps to neutralize the acids produced in your muscles when you lift.
