My Attempt at Indian Improvisation

Hmm, sorry about the lighting.

Anyhow, this was pretty interesting. I have a pretty poor understanding of Indian classical music, but I gave it a quick go with the camera rolling before I had to shut everything down for the night, and this is what I came up with.

Luan is just really niceLuan is just really nice
that's good!
some suggestions:
try the major pentatonic scale, there is a raga that uses it.
don't use vibrato
try to play it on acoustic, bends will sound really good.
keep at it!

Thanks for the advice!
Ok, I lack a properly intonated acoustic, otherwise I would
I will try major pentatonic scale, and I am working with Avasari (spelling?) Raga, which is like a pentatonic Phrygian dominant going up, and a normal phrygian dominant going down.

No vibrato I'm going for sarrod and sitar sounds... And they use lots of vibrato.

wow, you listen to sarod! that's nice, but no, vibrato isn't used in indian classical music, what you are referring to is the articulations used, such as the meend, etc

Ok, I'll definitely have to look deeper. I'm also quite into traditional flamenco (Paco De Lucia, Paco Pena) and emotionally follow the flamenco "passion" emotional school, as opposed to the rock "pumped and energetic", or the laid back "spontaneity" and "soulfullness" of blues (and many others of course).

I also follow a lot of jazz, fusion, swing, and world jazz, and also flamenco-jazz (Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea etc.).

Unfortunately, I'm not a metal player. I just "can't do it". I find playing Al Di Meola to be a style I'm much more natural and comfortable in.

Well, classic music of india has that "soulfullness" (as you said) of the blues.
I love john mclaughlin, I'm a big fan of him.

I'm speaking very lightly of a complex and deeply emotionally link between sound and a person's soul, but thanks, I will try to capture this soulfullness.

1) Can you describe what improvisation should be like in Indian music?

For example, the blues has a "call and answer" format at times (among others).

2) What notes within a scale or raga is common to resolve too? (Western
resolves to root, 5th, 7th)

3) Any other general advice or wisdom you could tell me in addition to your first post?

Thanks so much, I love exploring new forms of music, and I believe this really does help

1) I suggest you to listen a lot. If you study classical music with a professor (that would be the way if you want to really understand that music) you will learn that you have to "show" slowly the raga in alap (the first section), at first you don't play the characteristic notes of the raga, you give them slowly, then you play the melody, and depends on the raga on how it continues.

2) I can't give you an aswer since it depends on the raga, there are some in wich the root is avoided most of the time! but if you play it, you know it's the root, that gives each raga a unique personality, it's something that doesn't happens in the rest of the styles, each scale is treated differently, you know, you can ascend it in one way, but you descend it another way, etc.

3)yes, if you really want to learn, you can search for a teacher. who knows, maybe you travel to india someday (like my dad and all the musicians I know that play classical music from india).

Very interesting.

I've played Western solo classical piano for 12 years now, and a year ago or so started branching into playing the blues, (I always had been listening to it) and then to even more forms of expression. I also use my keyboard to do some oriental/asiatic things with koto patches and shakuhachi patches, but I need more work.

Thanks so much for your help
