I don't know if that's really a fair comparison, as IA's style is very much his own, and he obviously isn't attempting to emulate Shawn (who's pretty much irreplaceable) here.

This trio format really seems to suit Jonas, and it's bringing out an interesting side to IA's playing that he doesn't display much on his own albums and his recordings with Freak Kitchen, so I'd say it's great that they're both doing this, especially considering Jonas had said he'd never play with another guitarist again after Shawn died.

The music they did together in the '80s didn't turn out all that great, IMHO. Jonas was in the Mahavishnu "reunion" band in the mid-'80s, and it was a big snoozefest. I think it was just the era, which sucked for jazz, plus the fact that McLaughlin seemed more interested in playing acoustic at that point. I also think it would be cool if they got together again now that McLaughlin has some bite in his playing again and Jonas is older and more mature.
