Really well done ligeti organ video

So there is some interest in composers like messiaen, though i'm fairly new to all of them posted here. Certainly need to expand the catalogue from several cds. Anyway, this looks like an organist reading a seismograph reading, very dramatic. Can't find the youtube button

YouTube - Ligeti: aus Volumina

Well that was... umm... interesting.

You've got your head down
You've got your eyes closed
You look so pitiful now

Your body encrusted with ash
Breath heavy with toxins
Hair singed and matted
Clothes frayed and burnt

You are left with nothing

Interesting music to say at least.
The notation is called graphic notation and is very usefull when working with atmospheric pieces.

i'll have to watch that again tomorrow when i can actually turn up the volume a bit. some crazy shit from what i could tell, though. pipe organs rule, and some of the really weird, out there 20th/21st century music is really cool. i heard the world premiere of Kaija Saariaho's "Notes on Light" cello concerto, which, while not quite as extreme as this, was very cool....basically a showcase for all the crazy techniques and sounds you can do with an orchestra.

watched it again just now.....shit's pretty crazy. could be cool for a sort of atmospheric horror film score.

also, the best part is the dude's face and movements.

Ari I'm very envious! She's one of my favorite composers. She does lots of cello music and some really cool stuff with a cello equipped with a quadraphonic pickup which I heard live in surround sound years ago.

If I had to pick one favorite composer though, it'd be Ligeti. His Requiem is utterly intense.

I saw a live performance of Volumina years ago, but we couldn't see the organist as he played so this video was a fantastic insight into the playing techniques used in the piece.

I love his second string quartet as well. Here's an excerpt:

Thanks for the info, that is new to me. And Durero, you said you heard this in person? I am curious as to how tremendous it actually felt, I would guess something like that must be an immense amount of air movement. Like many, 2001 and the Requiem at the end was my introduction to Ligeti. Had the privilege of seeing that on a larger then normal movie screen for a one night showing. As for Ligeti, the local public radio station was doing a segment on Hungarian music, and had a large portion dedicated to him, it was the first time I've heard him on the radio. The announcer quoted him in some way saying that he feels imprisoned between the experimental and avant garde classifications. I'll make sure to check out that quartet when I have a better connection, it sounds interesting.

Couldn't find anything in search engines on the organist either, would like to find some recordings of his perhaps.
