![]() ![]() ![]() | Help with my all-region jazz improv.. So all-region tryouts are tomorrow and I'm still worried about how I'll do. I can't read music yet, and there's a sightreading part on it..which isn't going to turn out well. The etudes I have to know shouldn't be too much of a problem, it's just getting them memorized. But I'm really needing some help on the improv. It's not very long 40-50 seconds and you have to improv over these chord changes: F7 for one bar, Bb7 for one bar, F7 for two, Bb7 for two, F7 fpr twp. Gm7 for 1, C7 for one, F7 and that's basically it. My friend has suggested I use F Mixolydian over the F7, Bb Mixolydian over the Bb7, and G blues over the Gm7. Of course I'm going to play around with all of this, but anyone have any tips? Any help is much appreciated. |

![]() | Record yourself playing the chords then jam with the improv. I think JamStudio.com you can just punch in the chords and the jam over them. Its cool I play jazz and can't read music either, it is mainly just chords. Good luck peace |

If you wanna win some serious jazz brownie points, though, you could treat the 7 chords like they are the 5 in a 2-5-1 and solo using the relative dorian mode, which I realize is all the same notes as mixolydian, just in a different order. To emphasize the dorian, use a C minor arpeggio over the F7 and a F minor arpeggio over the Bb7. Might be confusing, I'll try to answer questions about that if you have any. Either way, good luck with the audition and post back when you know how you did ![]() edit: Check out this thread as well.
