Wow, that seemed to have come out of nowhere. Do you know what happened to him? Was he even known to be unhealthy or anything?

Maybe he'll get the kind of attention that Pavarotti has received (which surprised me as there aren't that many opera fans out there). It's probably not likely since he's not AS huge in jazz as Pavarotti was in opera but still, it'd be nice.

He'd just come off of a small tour, but was hospitalized sometime in August (according to wikipedia). I think it was cancer. His death actually made me think, how big do you have to be in jazz to get media coverage when you die? Its a sad thing.

Maybe you have to do a lot of crossover stuff with pop stars or somehow become one of those rare names that everyone knows even if they have no idea what you do. I was too young to remember clearly but did Miles Davis even get media coverage? I think if anyone in jazz was going to he'd be the one.

Not sure about Davis. The only "jazz" guy i can think of who is sure to see media coverage when he dies is Santana.

Santana? I've never thought of him as anything remotely resembling a jazz musician. I guess I could see it to some degree but only because he doesn't stick to blues scales. You're right though, he'll get coverage for sure.
