 | I got Completely Owned! so i was trying this preamp a guy was selling.. and hes a year younger than me.. he let me play.. i play the usual arpeggiated solos and scale runs etc... then he says he liked my esp.. so ilet him try it out.. JESSSSUUUUUS!! this guys completely fuckin owned me on the guitar and made me feel like a freaking beginner.. he was just jamming along playing jazz chords then went on to play some amazingly technical leads that put my skills to shit... so i asked him how did you get that good... and he said he started to learn loads of jazz theory and chords etc.. and then when put in practice you get used to know every note on the neck and scales etc.. so to end this boring thread.. what books or websites do you guys recommend for me to start learning jazz theory ? The Struggle to free Myself from Restraints, becomes my very shackles... |

| yeah, it happens. rofl. like when our second guitarist joined our band, and i saw him rip away some holdsworth style leads that just blew my miniscule mind away. then i got holdsworth's instructional video. now, over a year later, i can hold my own with him, hehehe. |

Worth it for the front cover photos alons! |

| I've decided recently over a nice talk with a jazz drummer friend of mine about a few aspects of certain music and I feel as well as I should take up jazz since it makes you think different about playing from what I've seen. I've hit a plateau, I've been playing for a fairly short time in comparison to many people but I cannot progress and have several flaws, yet I am intrigued by jazz theory and playing. Do you know of anywhere else to start? To the original poster, sorry about the thread jack but it's fairly on topic. Heh. |

  | +10000 for Mick Goodrick and Ted Greene. Also, try REH's 'Jazz-rock solos for guitar' book, as that's a great introduction to jazz and fusion soloing for someone who comes from a rock/metal background, and has some pretty decent backing tracks included. Incidentally, Vic Juris is writing a very informative jazz column in Guitar World right now. You might wanna check that out. | Joey's great, but I don't think he's one to study if you're interested in jazz, as his thing is more rock-fusion based. A thought; if you really want to get into jazz, one of the best things you can do is get a fakebook and start learning some tunes. Start off just learning the melodies and chords, then you can experiment with chord-melody and adding basslines to them, as well as playing over the changes. It's also great practice to pick up licks from other musicians (by ear ideally. NO TAB!!!!), even if you don't immediately understand the theory behind what they're doing. |
