My Jazz Overload Weekend

Hey all, I was at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee this weekend. Most of the festival is devoted to jam bands and indie rock on big outdoor stages, but I spent most of the weekend in air-conditioned comfort watching great jazz in a big enclosed tent set up to look like an NYC jazz club, which was sponsored by Blue Note Records. They even had cocktail waitresses, which meant that I had a couple of beers or so. Here is the list of jazz artists I saw:

Robert Glasper Trio. Just a freakin' incredible pianist.

Ravi Coltrane Quartet
. Has a lot of his father's spirit.
Jacky Terrasson Trio. Jazz piano with lots of Debussy/Ravel influence.
Stefon Harris & Blackout. This guy makes vibes/marimba VERY hip. My favorite of the weekend.
Don Byron Don is a great saxophonist/clarinetist who did a very funky set of soul-jazz. Rockin!
David Murray & The Black Saint Quartet Some of the deepest music I've ever heard.

There's a lot more to talk about, but you get the idea of how much my head is spinning from so much great music. I caught a sinus infection from all of the dust swirling in the air on the last day of the festival, and I'm just waiting to get well so I can lock myself in the studio and translate some of vibe I got from the weekend into some jazz/metal.

You should really check out Stefon's album "Evolution", which is his first (and so far only) album with the Blackout band. It is Groov-ay! His live set is more explosive, but the album has a great funky chill vibe that I love. His vibes/marimba playing is fantastic. I've always loved that sound due to my years of listening to Zappa, but I never explored jazz vibes/marimba due to its reputation as "cocktail lounge jazz". Stefon is a long way from that.

BTW, I should also mention that I saw James Blood Ulmer and Ornette Coleman on the larger outdoor stages. Ulmer is just unbelievable--I can't believe I've been playing for 25 years and never discovered him before now. His set blew me away. Sort of a jazz/blues hybrid with unbelievable intensity and passion. Sadly, Ornette had to leave the stage early due to heat stroke (he's 77 years old), but for the half-hour or so he played, he was on fire.
