Scofield fans and/or effects junkies, help me out!
Does anyone know the name of the effect John uses to play the chord melody at the beginning of "I Brake 4 Monster Booty" from Uberjam, for example? It's all over his more recent playing, and I love the sound of it, but I'm not really sure what it is exactly. It sounds like some sort of tape modulation/Leslie effect and I'd love to get my hands on one. Any ideas?

He has a roto-sphere on his pedalboard, so it could be that...
Nothing like a good depressant to chase the blues away!

Also, if it sounds slightly backwards, it may be his boomerang looper as it was about that time he really started using that more. |

I'm thinking it probably is the rotosphere. If you listen to the Medeski/Scofield/Martin/Wood album that just came out, the effect is all over that as well, but used more subtly. On the track I mentioned before, it's much more blatant and sounds more like a tape being chewed up rather than anything else.
The Boomerang stuff is usually pretty easy to pick, and sounds pretty cool as well. Thanks! |
