What the hell is up with...

...jazzers calling melodic minor, "real" minor? if anything should be called that, it's natural minor. melodic minor is basically just a major scale with a flattened 3rd degree, not very "real" imo...never mind the fact that true melodic minor is different ascending and descending, and jazzers love to have it the same going both ways.


you'd think that being a berklee student, i'd have the answer to this, but alas, i do not. i've wondered about this for a while, but was reminded of it today.

I'm guessing it's because the melodic minor and its associated modes are more common in jazz than the Aeolian mode...

Well, that's because "jazzers" are arrogant and consider all other minor scales to be "fake minor" and "melodic minor" to be "real minor." Harmonic minor is not even consider minor at all in the eyes of many "jazzers," while the regular "minor scale" is sometimes known as the "accursed counterfeit scale."

Counterfeit scales are depriving many musicians of their income by providing cheap, easily available knock-offs of authentic scales, that lots of people have worked very long and hard to provide. Support the industry, and only accept the TRUE melodic minor!

Yeah, right. But Natural minor is nothing but the 6th mode of the Major scale, so why should it be considered "true" ? To me, nothing should be considered as real or false ... Major, Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor have different chords progressions, nothing is supreme, only usable. The goal is still to make music.

hmmm if my memory isn't failing me, real minor is only the ascending form of melodic minor (I,II,bIII,IV,V,VI,VII). Major scale with flat third and that's it.

But yeah, that doesn't change the fact, most jazzmen I've heard of are sophisticated arrogants jackass. But not all!!!! Or I wouldn't be here..... héhéhé

It's only classical musicians who play it differently ascending and descending. Jazzers play it the same both ways.
