I've found that when your are hybrid picking it works really well for keeping a basic rhythmic pattern with the thumb and then using the other two or three fingers to begin legato lines, allot of those country guys use pulloffs to finish off their legato lines and then pluck and legato the low e string to start off another set if legato notes.

i would love to put my hands on those chris broderick clip things he uses
i love the idea of thumb picks, but cant play at all with one
