Classical guitar w/steel strings?

I've been wanting to know what would happen if you did that. Anyone ever put steel strings on a classical nylon string guitar?

GASing for a damn 7 string acoustic and there just isn't any... besides nylon stringed ones.
This won't stop me from getting one.. but I'm just curious.

Not a good idea. Classical guitars generally don't have the bracing required to handle that kind of tension. It would totally kill the sound of the nylon strings, as they are much less powerful than traditional steel strings. If you want to go about it via the DIY method, grab a pawn shop 12-string, as it will have the bracing and neck construction that you're gonna need for the conversion. You can use the seven closest tuners, fill the extraneous holes and shape the headstock as desired. You can either fill in the holes on the bridge, keep the extra pegs in there, or just replace the bridge. Then either slot up a nut and saddle yourself or take it to a trusted local shop and have a professional take care of it if you don't feel you're up to the task. They're very crucial parts in the puzzle.

Thanks for the informative reply!

That's exactly what I thought would happen.
I guess that's what I will have to do then...

Quite welcome. I might take this same route, myself. I can't ever seem to find an AJ307 or a Performer SE7 anywhere. I'd be willing to snag up either one of those, but...

yeah, steel strings, on classical guitar usually result in either the the bridge lifting off, the machine-heads cracking, the neck lifting away, or just snapping clean off... not the best of ideas... The 12 string conversion sounds an interesting plan though...
