Unwanted string noise on nylon string?

I was trying a guitar today and I noticed some things that bothered me. When I played an A on fret 5 on the E string. The 5th string would start ringing out kind of like a harmonic, why? The other guitars did it to to an extent also but it is really anoying, especially when playing finger style where you shouldnt have to worry about muting. It also happened on other frets to and usually they were the same notes on different octaves, anyway to eliminate this? Could it just be a bad string brand?

Maybe it was fretting out somewhere. A good setup and maybe a fret level (worst case, a refret) should fix it. Guitars in stores are rarely set up properly.

Whats fretting out? It didnt seem to have anything to do with the frets.

Thanks! That sounds about right, is this hard to get rid of on a nylon string, the guitar in question is one im considering buying but the "wolf tone" is really noticeable and I was hoping new strings might fix it.

Tie a sock around the neck.

I don't think you were hearing a wolf tone. You were playing a note that was exactly in tune with one of the other strings of the guitar (A on the 6th string = open 5th string). The 5th string was ringing sympathetically - on an instrument like guitar, there's no real way around this sort of thing other than muting.
