The lute
Who owns one? Who's played one?
I love the sound of this instrument! I'm currently listening to a CD of Julian Bream playing some lute music, and it's just beautiful. I often tune the third string on my classical guitar down a half-step and slap a capo at the third fret, to play in six-string lute tuning (GCFADG) and it sounds awesome.
Nothing like a good depressant to chase the blues away!

I want one, I had the chance to buy one once for 500 dollars, i beat myself everyday that I did not take the chance.
There are also a 10 string acoustic for 1000 dollar in my hometown. I need money. But to get back on the subject, the lute is a great instrument, but I have found it pretty hard to get strings for it. Might be easier in usa. |

My uncle has one. I've played it at his house. He has about 36 guitars (electric, acoustic, classical, etc.) and about 15 other instruments (mandolin, mandola, lute, laptop steel guitar, piano, violin, etc.). The lute has a pretty cool sound.

Never played one myself, but I'm very interested in a close relative of the lute - the viol family. These are instruments contemporary to the lute family, same tunings, but held upright and played with a bow.
Specifically I'd like to try a 7-string viola-de-gamba. There's a really cool movie about two historical French gamba players called Tout les Matins du Monde (All the Mornings of the World) which is really worth watching. |

Someone post a link to a guy who was making electric viols a while ago. They certainly looked like fun!
