RARE Ibanez American Master M3

Brief & Accurate Description of gear/guitar:
Modifications (if any): I am putting some of my Ibanez collection up for sale because I have too many guitars to justify in this crappy economy. What sells sells, what doesn’t gets kept. This is not a fire sale so low ball offers will be laughed at and summarily dismissed. ALL of the instruments I’m putting up for sale are ones I have owned for years, all have been maintained, set up, and or modded to the pickiest specs in the world (mine). All play ridiculously well, I don’t tolerate high action or crappy fretwork (what you’d call low, I’d call medium), loose parts, questionable tuning stability, etc. If you pick up any of these models at random (assuming you can find one) you’d have to put at least $200-$600 more into it to match what mine have already got. You can email me for references from (that online auction site we aren’t supposed to mention) and from (that online gear page we aren’t supposed to mention.)

Prices includes Paypal send has a gift and Insured Shipping. Email me for pics.

$1500

ULTRA RARE hand made Ibanez American Master USA made MA3 Neck Through RG with AM neck through Wizard neck, recently re-fretted with Dunlop 6100 jumbo frets. PLEKKED (computer controlled fret leveling) with a custom program for super low action (how low? See below!). Zero fretwear. Cherry sunburst finish, fantastic clean low action (see below), DiMarzio Breed Neck (in bridge position, slightly hotter PAF Pro similar to the MOJOE) & Duncan Jazz neck. With your choice of molded Ibanez Prestige Deluxe case (shown) or Ibanez wood and tolex rectangular case (both cases in good condition all hardware works etc; the molded case fits like a glove and IMO protects the guitar much better since it has no room to move around). The wood case might be the OHSC, not sure since I bought this used, but it came with it. The best low-action-thin-neck speed machine you will ever touch, with killer tone to boot. This is your chance to own a very rare piece of Ibanez history from the Ibanez USA era.

Beautiful birdseye figuring in the maple neck through with wavy figure in the maple body wing caps, mahogany back, matching painted headstock. The neck looks to be ONE PIECE of birdseye maple, there is NO scarf joint. Q parts tiger’s eye knobs for bling. Real Abalone/Pearl block fretboard inlays, not the cheap mother-of-toilet seat crap you see on most guitars nowadays. Natural wood binding on the neck.

The American Master series were a limited run of Ibanez badged guitars made by America luthiers in California in 1990. There were VERY few made (by all accounts, less than 100) because the small luthiers couldn’t keep up with demand. They are very high quality RGs, the best you’ll ever see. Search the Jem site for more details.

NECK: The AM wizard neck is not like your standard original wizard or that larger thing they call a wizard neck nowadays. Its both rounder in back and feels thinner, having less shoulder and fitting in the palm better. I wish they had copied this neck and made it the standard wizard, but it’s a handmade guitar so its available only on this model and each one is probably a little different. Suffice to say, if you like thin and fast necks like the Ibanez wizard, you will LOVE this one. It has a superior feel in a lot of ways. Very strong and stable in spite of the birdseye maple, which can have a tendency to not be as strong as eastern maple. I use 12-56 strings at standard pitch on this guitar and it almost never needs a truss rod adjustment, which is more than I can say for some of my other guitars with larger necks that often need truss rod adjustments 5-10 times a year. The American Master wizard neck through gives easy access to all 24 frets with no neck heel getting in the way.

BRIDGE: Lo Pro Edge with black finish in very good shape. Not pitted and rusted like so many of these older Edge bridges seem to be. Has the following upgrades: BIG BRASS BLOCK for increased sustain and better tone. Floppy, breakable Ibanez bar replaced with Floyd Rose bar with screw on collar. Won’t Break, goes on and off easy, and STAYS PUT, unlike the stock Ibanez Edge type bar. Best upgrade you can do on an Ibanez Edge bridge. Note: This bridge is RADIUSED properly, stock bridges need this done as the machining of the parts is such that the string height across the board is rarely what it should be. This has been compensated for on this guitar by shimming the saddles where necessary.

This guitar has been Plekked for perfect fret leveling by Joe Glaser in Nashville, Luthier to Nashville stars (several stopped by while I was in the shop with Joe). Joe is the national rep for Plek who sets up every Plek machine in the US and some in other countries. Joe used special low action friendly settings that we came up with, different and cleaner than the standard “low action” plek program. Action will set up and play clean at the following heights: @14th fret, High E .04”, Low E .06”. You can get a bit lower if you have a light touch. I personally set it up a hundredth lower with 12s at standard pitch. If you are ham-fisted you may want to raise it. That’s without choking out on full step bends, without annoying buzz, etc. That’s much lower than most guitars will do. Exact measurements of front-to-back of neck thickness, are as follows: 1st fret: .70” (17mm)12th fret: .82” (21mm). The measurements don’t tell the whole story though since the profile is different that the production wizard necks.

Cosmetic Condition: This is not a mint museum piece. It has been gigged regularly, as you’ll want to do with it. From 5’ away you don’t notice anything. From close up it has dings, mostly around the edges. Nothing that keeps it from being a stunningly beautiful guitar, see pics. Plus you can play it and wont have to sweat putting that ‘first ding’ into it. No neck cracks where the locking nut screws go through or any of that stuff.

ELECTRONICS: DiMarzio Breed neck in Bridge position (don’t let the ‘neck’ designation fool you, it’s a decently hot medium output pup, see DiMarzio’s site) and Duncan Jazz Neck. 24 pole 5 way switch replacing the gimpy stock YM50 switch. Switch positions: 1) Bridge 2) Neck split + bridge split, hum canceling, 3) Neck + Bridge, full humbucking mode 4) Neck, paralleled coils 5) Neck, series coils.
Accessories (hardshell case etc): hardshell case and case candy
