"Their Old Stuff Was Better!!!"
![]() Anyway... I know you've all heard that about any number of bands. Today I was listening to some of my own songs... And I've noticed that I like my older shit better. It's kind of annoying... It seems like the more I learn the less I like my own music and it drives me nuts. I'm not sure what else to say about it... Just wanted to vent a little. Konfyouzd OUT...

As an old days metallica fan, I know what your talking about...
Its like there was those epic songs once created and that it will never became as epic as it did at one point... You know like, what can beat a good old ''Orion'' ? ![]() EDIT: apperently I was breathing too much mahogany today and went totally off topic, sorry

It might be that you are just kind of attached to the older songs you have written because some sort of nostalgia or something of that sort.I find myself doing that also sometimes. Although the more i start to play my new songs and perfect them I realize i like them a lot better.

but i was listening to some of my older ones and i start thinking "wow... some of these solos aren't bad at all." i wish i could write a song and then flash myself in the face with one of those Men In Black things so i could hear it as if i were someone else if that makes any sense. With other bands, it's usually the case that you just aren't going to like something you've never heard before as much as something you have listened to a million times. You like the older stuff because you are familiar with it, so obviously newer stuff you won't like as much straight away. Or, sometimes, a band will go in a direction where they lose some of what it was that drew you to them in the first place.
With your own stuff, I guess maybe there's still the thing that you like it more because you're more familiar with it. It's also possibly the case that as the creator of the music, you are far more aware of any faults, or possibly perceive things to be faults that others won't notice or consider to be problems. That is more likely to be true of stuff you've just written, whereas with older stuff, perhaps you've forgotten the things you thought were wrong with it in the first place and hear it more for what it is... |

Yea for sure, i think this also has to do with the fact that the first few songs a band or individual write they are taking a long time to write and get perfect / where as the newer stuff some times gets put together faster.
My favorite Opeth CD's are the first two, the quality of music was so epic! |

i get mixed feelings about my personal songs. usually when i record, whatever comes out is a reflection of how i was feeling at the moment. in my case, i wrote some softer stuff early on, then got progressively heavier over time. i find that some times, i just want to listen to my softer stuff and other times its the heavier stuff i wanna hear. but also, my older recordings are crap quality as i was just getting into it, so that plays a little role in what i want to listen to of my own songs.
i get this feeling all the time. sometimes i even feel like ive run out of ideas and I need to jam with some people to get more ideas to just come to me. Originally Posted by Necris "Pee in her butt, leave with her television." My Band Website http://www.soundclick.com/bands/defa...?bandID=969789

For some of the bands I listen to, it's like Poopyalligator said - there's a nostalgia attached to it. No CD will ever come close to the feelings I get when I hear Paramore's "RIOT!" or Coheed's "Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV" album, but I still enjoy their other works for sure.
Sometimes there is just a natural (or shitty) progression in there music. A LOT of people hate new Bodom from AYDY? and Blooddrunk, but I can tolerate it - it doesn't get me as excited as say Hatebreeder or Hate Crew Deathroll but I can tolerate it. Same for old vs. new In Flames. I dig the SHIT out of Come Clarity and A Sense of Purpose but ....ing HATED Soundtrack to Your Escape. Does it mean that ALL they're new shit is bad? No, some people just have different tastes. I think part of it also applies to the whole "putting a band in your back pocket" thing like Mark Morton said. Bands sounds change, partially due to natural progression, partially to sell albums maybe, but if the sound changes to what some might consider drastically different the band is no longer the same as to when they were lesser known and a handful of people enjoyed them and could spread by word of mouth (´・ω・`) In space, no one can hear you bree. - Metal Ken |

Amen to that. Administering Opeth immediately...

Ever noticed how some people are real dicks on the internet, but when they post something involving their band, they make the effort to be nice? Funny that... |

I hear you. I listen back to some old stuff of mine and seem to sense a rawness that I like. I was hungrier or more passionate about my direction or something. I think alot of artists have this, and as an example (as long as we are using Metallica as a reference) I will point out the clear difference of "Kill 'Em All" to everything else in the Metallica catalouge. There is something more raw to those tunes that makes that album special. But then as they evolved, things got even sicker and more mature, then Cliff died and Metallica got soft... I digress... Whatever, maybe the old tunes can inspire the new stuff and capture that vibe again. |

More often than not I prefer a band's older shit to their new shit, but in the rare occasion I find that a band's new CD kicks all sorts of ass and easily stands on it's own against their older shit.

Example: Agorapocalypse, just as good if not better as all of ANb's older stuff. Okay, probably not really better as that's completely up to the listener to decide, so definitely just as good. ![]() It's kind of like that with Meshuggah, but with them I prefer their "in between" stuff. Nothing and Chaosphere are their 'best' albums IMESHO. I mean Obzen is awesome, but you just can't beat those Chaosphere and the ORIGINAL cut of Nothing. |

^ See I like all of Meshuggah's stuff, but I do see what you mean. I find myself wanting to hear songs like Corridor of Chameleons, Closed Eye Visuals, Straws Pulled at Random, New Millenium Cyanide Christ, etc when I think Meshuggah. Never really thought about it, though.
But then there are songs like In Death is Life/Death that just ....in' blow me away on their newer albums too. ![]() and who is ANb? not familiar... With me I like the ideas I had, but my arrangements weren't the best and my tone could have been better. But my stuff was far from horrible. I sometimes put it on for a good chuckle.

i notice that sometimes too. and then some of my older arrangements were good but the recording/mixing/etc is shitty and i'm too lazy to redo it. or when i try to redo it it just doesn't have that *something* i heard in the other one.

I don't really have any new stuff, seeing as I don't have the recording capabilities I did then, but I had one song that was unique and awesome. Wish I could find it again though. It was like a cross between Silversun Pickups, Dir en Grey, Mastodon, and it had a hip hop beat. I pine for the olden days

![]() There's obviously a few awesome passages, but not a song that I find consistently awesome. It's a bit cheesy and, dare I say it, gay. The following album, My Arms, Your Hearse is ....ing fantastic, and from there on it's just straight up awesome music. |

let's just start a ....in' band man... so in 20 years kids can sit around and have this same exact conversation about us.
