Interesting jazz artists

i've been trying to listen to more jazz artists lately and the two that i really like are wes montgomery (i've been listening to two or three of his songs for a year now) and herbie hancock (i actually had to play the bassline to one of his songs back in sophomore year and well, a few weeks ago i dug up the actual song on limewire and i've been hunting for other hh songs since)

i really just enjoy the smoothness of jazz. if any of you have any other jazz artists suggestions, who are they?

+1 on both of the above.

Check out Pat Metheny and Mike Stern as well. Try Stern's 'Upside Downside' album, which is the perfect blend of bebop and rock. Metheny's catalogue is almost universally awesome, but try 'Bright Size Life', which is wonderful.
Also get Jaco Pastorius' debut album. I can't really recommend that one enough, as Jaco was the guy who inspired me to give fusion a go. All musicians should own that album, regardless of what they play.
John Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' album is another essential one. No-one will ever do what he did ever again.

Not necessarily smooth, not always jazz, and not always featuring guitar, but try John Zorn and Uri Caine. Both of these guys have extremely diverse bodies of work, so take your time looking for the right discs for you.
