The best blues song by a guy who doesn't sing the blues.
For your viewing approval, I submit to you John Prine's "Pretty Good." Offensive on SO many levels, but just bloody genius.
"Well, I've got a friend in Phoenix, He sells used cars, you know... Once a year he calls me up, just to ask me how'd it go? Pretty good, not bad, guess I can't complain, But actually, everything is just about the same. Well I met a woman from Venus, her insides were made of gold. She did what she did, and asked how was it kid? and she was politely told, Pretty good, not bad, I guess I can't complain. But actually all them women are about the same. Moonlight makes me dizzy, sunlight makes me clean, but your light is the sweetest thing that this boy's ever seen... Molly went to Arkansas, where she was raped by Dobbin's dog. She was doing good, till she went into the woods, and got pinned up against a log. Pretty good, not bad, guess I can't complain, Cause actually, all them dogs are just about the same. Moonlight... (guitar solo courtesy of Steve Cropper) Well Ghandi and Buddha were singing at the Savior's feast, and up in the sky an arabian rabbi fed quaker oats to a priest. Pretty good, not bad, guess I can't complain, Cause actually all them gods are just about the same. Pretty good, not bad, guess I can't complain, Cause actually, everything's just about the same..." ![]()
"...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon."

![]() Man, I really enjoy some John Prine. He's one of those dudes that can have such a massive cult following on one side of the fence, yet you start talking to much of the masses and he's virtually unknown. I'm especially fond of "Souveniers", and I can't help but to giggle every time I hear "Dear Abby". He has so many really great songs. |

Prine's the man. I grew up on the guy, so I guess it's tough for me to see that because I'm part of that cult, but at the same time, so many people have no idea who wrote "Angel from Montgomery" when I mention the song; I get a lot of surprise that it wasn't a Dave Matthews original, lol.
Heard any of his newer stuff? He had a battle with throat cancer recently, kicked it, and came back with a rawer, deeper, raspier, but still recognizeable voice. Not only is that inspiring, it sounds pretty damned cool. ![]() |

No, I haven't heard anything recent from him in a really long time. I didn't know that about his throat cancer. Wow. I love to hear him sing, and I've always loved his lyrics.
