Hey,
I just stumbled across this vid, and I cannot wait for this DVD. Its called '12 Tone Variations' and it should be fantastic, especially seeing as its coming from Ron himself, so anyway, enjoy: |

I was literally just about to post this!!
Yeah, looks awesome
While raping a bear in Yellowstone and snorting coke out of a freshly-dead baby's skull, I finally felt that I had found my calling and built a time machine out of Iraqi WMDs and LOTS OF HEMP WHOA. Using this time machine I went back in time and shot JFK from outer ....ing space. The reason why this twelve tone music is interesting is because it's not truly atonal. It's split into three separate diminished tonal units with the notes jumbled around. It's a cool concept. I can't wait for this DVD, Ron is a rhythmic genius.

I dunno. Sounds like he's making something extremely simple--diminished chords--needlessly complicated. You could also fulfill the 12-tone scheme by moving them up by whole note increments instead of chromatically.
And you can do the same sorta thing with augmented chords. |

Looks really cool- he's a great player, and if the rest of the DVD is like this, i may have to pick it up.

This is his method, and if you want to learn the method he's devised to write his material (from his perspective), follow the theory. For someone with a background in theory, this is fairly obvious. But I don't think this is for people who have actually studied twelve tone theory to a degree. exactly... saying that it's just diminshed, completely misses the point. i think he lays it out in a way, that just reading/listening to his examples is enough to get a decent grasp of it... not much studying required, i'd think of it as more of a basic tool or guideline (like circle of 5ths.) |

I really admire the way the way Machinations was written. It seems to give an order to writing music, and Ron has proved along with many others that you can achieve some cool results.

Does anyone know what he's playing through? I know he uses Marshall amps but I've seen him use a number of others as well.
