I like to think of Tool as a two guitar band, the one guitarist just happens to be holding a bass Honestly though, as much as their music relies on the complexity of the interplay between instruments, you could take out any one instrument, and it'd still sound fucking cool

The man is also a volume knob master. It's fun listening to someone who can control distortion solely by the guitar's volume knob. That is an art that got left behind in the 70s.[/quote]
Yep. And actually he's using a volume pedal now too (according to the GW article). And a few other effects secrets (pedal controlled effects, like the speed of a tremolo effect )

That's acually a very good point, noodles - whenever I talk about using a one-channel amp to get both your clean tone and your distorted tone, I always find myself referring to it as "doing the Tool thing..." Sure, Adam didn't invent it, but he's one of the few guys who still does it, and it sounds awesome.

I have always been a fan of Tool. I really like Adam Jones sound and his style. I think I will listen to some Tool today.

Tool are actually my favourite band of all time...as many have already said, what Adam does isn't complex but it fits so well its awesomeness cannot be ignored. I don't see him so much as playing a guitar but creating an atmosphere and painting a picture for the listener to feel and see.

He's actually the reason why I picked up the guitar in the first place, which people are always a bit wierd about...especially when most the guys I know were inspired to play by Hendrix or Page. His style just seems to appeal more to me.

And that my friends is my input into this thread lol.

There was a time back where both of my distortion pedals were broken and so, what I did was turn the distortion up somewhat high and there were two methods I'd play. The first method was the Tool method where for soft parts I'm strumming lightly with the volume around 2. Then, I hit heavy distortion and turn the volume up to 8-10 and start strumming/picking harder. That worked on a lot of songs, but there were a lot of songs where the change was instantaneous, so I couldn't do that. So, what I did is I set the volume on my bridge pickup at 2 and set the volume on my neck pickup at 10. Then when I hit distortion, I'd flip the selector switch straight up. That worked pretty well too.

Yeah, when I did Tool covers, I just rolled down the volume for cleaner parts.

I have always thought that 'the grudge' is one of the best songs ever. Every note is there for a purpose. In my opinion Adam Jones doesn't play to look like a great guitarist. He plays to make you feel an emotion and feel the music.
