Random Musical Ideas?

Anyone else get sudden urges to do something completely different musically than you usually do?

Like, my band is sort of metal with female vocals...I guess we'd have to call it "nu-metal" by most peoples standards, but only because we blend a few different styles. It's kinda like System of a Down meets A Perfect Circle meets Metallica (all albums) meets Ra meets random punk influences meets whatever we're listening to at the time.

But lately my drummer and I have been considering starting a punk/ska band on the side for fun (7-strings of course ), and I've been wanting to start an alt-rock band (like Days of the New/I Mother Earth/The Tea Party/Incubus/Sister Hazel/etc.) to expand on my songwriting and to challenge myself to write lighter and mellower songs.

I've also been considering talking to some clubs downtown about maybe starting booking all-ages shows around noon for the high school kids on lunch break (there's three high schools downtown, that's a lot of kids, and right now there's no one out there doing anything for the all-ages crowd at all, and this could be a cool idea to create a place that's fun for the kids to hang out at and a great chance for bands to find younger fans).

Everything I write comes out weird. I can see where the influences are coming from but I never plan any of it.

Alot of my stuff sounds cartoony or classical. Any "metal" riffs I write sound like early 90's metal stuff or math metal stuff.

Which is why I'm taking music theory. I need some damn structure!

Doing something different from what i usually do? Sounds like my mental process every time i pick up the guitar, since i regularly can't remember what i played last time i picked up the instrument.

Every day is a musical adventure!

It helps having a handful of guitars that all sound different, and having a modeling processor that i know my way around, so i can get sounds that inspire all sorts of crazy nonsense very easily.

maskofduality is on a distinguished road
lately i've been trying to see which will fly better, progressive metal and numetal or techno-ish metal and jazz...

Yeah, it's a constant state of being for me. I'm still grinding away, slowly, on my album, but there's also part of me that wants to learn to sing and do an album of REALLY sparse acoustic stuff, sorta Opeth-does-Damnation-y but a little more bluesy. And learning how to play jazz properly'd be fun... And i still want a 7-string bass to do solo bass stuff on it. And I'd loveto do completely tripped out textural shit too.

I figure, I should probably do one album and then start work on 6 unrelated ones.

i love playing different stuff. In fact randomness breeds killer riffs. i don't think any band should be limited by a style. even with a female vocal band, you should still throw in blasbeats as far as i am concerned, and mix down tempo, with mid and up tempo

And playing other styles is good for the soul

Play whatever you feel in your heart, and it will be appreciated by people with like hearts. Most people like music from the heart. I prefer music from the bowels, though.

I try to be as diverse as possible, and my band certainly has a very diverse mix of influences and song styles, but it all works together and always manages to sound like "us".

A couple of years ago I was playing guitar in a thrash metal band at the weekends and playing cornet in a brass band during the week. How's that for diversity?

Absolutely. Sometimes I'll say to myself, "What the heck? Let's try to play this right for a change."
