Crystal Planet appreciation thread

I listened to this again today and I must say that Secret Prayer rules, his tone and solo on that song has to be my favorite of his on this album, the whole entire album is Satch's best work IMO, every song has it's own character, it's perfect music for when you're driving too, I love it.

Flying In A Blue was the first album I ever got into so it is hard to put CP above that, but after another listen, I have to, Crystal Planet is brilliant. Anybody agree?

Rasberry Jam Delta-V is such a cool fucking song. I remember feeling very 80s learning how to play the intro.

The tapping sequence that starts off "Raspberry Jam" is really what got me into Satch. I'd already been floored by a teriffic live-in-the-studio version of "Always With Me, Always With You" and had bought Surfing, but at the time I was listening to a lot of grunge and blues, and the production of that disc made it a little tough for me to relate to. Then I picked up the first G3, and the live stuff was a lot better, but I'd kinda written of Satriani as a great guitarist who just couldn't record a good sounding studio album to save his life when the Guitar Player issue with the "Crystal Planet" lesson/interview in it arrived in my mailbox.

I started thumbing through it, and there was some cool stuff and it was really a good read, and then I see this wild two-handed tapping lick where you fret an octave with your picking hand and tap out melody notes with your fretting hand. I thought, "I've GOT to try that," and my hacked-off version sounded cool enough that I decided to buy the album just to see if I got it right.

It then only left my CD player for the next two weeks only to go into someone else's, accompanied with a "You have GOT to hear this guy play."

It would not be an understatement to say that "Crystal Planet" was life-altering, for me - without it, I'd probably be playing Nirvana influenced originals with lead breaks composed of a bunch of grunge-d up Albert King licks.

Albert King = I have a cd of him jamming w/SRV back in 1983 -really cool.

Raspberry Jam Delta V is awesome but I've always liked the Live in S.F. version a little better.

I've heard theAK/SRV album is incredible, Shawn, and that both men show a huge amount of respect for each other in their playing.

LISF? Are you crazy, dude? He PICKS that riff in that one, instead of tapping. The outro, however, is awesome.

I'd put Crystal Planet in Joe's top 3, along with Surfing and The Extremist. I'd also include Flying in a Blue Dream in there, if it didn't have any vocals--the instrumentals on Flying might be Joe's best work of all, especially the title track and that jam at the end.

Drew, yeah, I know he picks it on the Live in SF version, but it's just his playing, it's flawless and his tone.

Even Crystal Planet is awesome on the Live in SF cd.

Ceremony and Love Thing however, I like the album version better. I guess I really like the live versions of these CP songs, well most of them.
