Thanks, dude. I really just aproach music from an individual basis. Any other way, and you can overlook some great stuff. For the most part, I'm not into grunge, but denying the genre denies a songs as fucking awesome as "Jesus Christ Pose" or "Would". I also have to leave room for bands I generally hate with songs I love, like Pearl Jam's "Alive" or STP's "Interstate Love Song". Then you've got band's like Tool that positively defy classification, or bands like King Crimson who are more of an abstract experiment/musical journey than <insert genre> band.

The industry as a whole discourages musical exploration/experimentation, because it makes their job harder. I hate them for that.

Me too. I understand the business side, but I'm an artist at heart, and would rather hear passionate folk music - or passionate just about anything - than by-the-numbers metal.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

Now there is a genre of music that has been pickled. Bob Dylan, Joan Bayez, James Taylor, etc come along and turn the world on its ear, and then everyone that follows them decides that everything to say has already been said.

It's ironic you say that, too, because I'm always sort of introducing these folksy, acoustic, protest type elements into my band's music, which is primarily metal. But it's a terrific area in music, and ripe for exploration these days I think. Also alot of truth and artistic integrity/vision there.

Nothing wrong with that, because bands used to do that shit all the time. As Scott Ian once said, the first listen of "Battery" leaves you wondering what they were thinking in the middle of the song, but repeted listens make you realize it is the coolst part of the song.

To take this one even further on a tangent, are you guys familiar with Nick Drake, by any chance? I think his "Cello Song" is one of the most gorgeous peices of music I've ever heard.

Never heard of him, but Pachelbel's Canon in D is the most beautiful composition I've ever heard. Every time I hear it, I can't decide if I want to grow wings and fly, or sit in the corner and cry like a little girl.

+10000000 cool points for Drew! Nick Drake is one of my favourite artists of all time! If you haven't got all three of his albums, go out and get them, pronto. You won't regret it!

Nothing like a good depressant to chase the blues away!

whoever wrote this article is a complete dumb ass. Shred is one fuck of a genre to take on as far as songwriting. They're fucking stupid.

Nah, you just sound angry.

80's= boring shred and love ballads. (Oh and there were some kickass death and power metal bands too).

Songwriting wise? It all sounds like a bunch of stuff they learned in music theory played blazingly fast and clean. Yes you must be dedicated to achieve this, but where is the passion?
