Sonata Arctica Appreciation Thread

Yep, the title says it.

If you dig this band, please share your points of interest/obsession/unhealthy obsession.. its well deserved on their part.

P.S.: If I were gay, I'd be gay for Tony Kakko and his amazing song writing skills.

H yeah dude, and even though Jani was/is one of my all time favorite guitar players, the new dude - Elias - is ....ing ridiculous. He's mini-Vai (no really, he looks like him, plays jems, tears it the .... up, etc)

On a whole other note, Sonata rock!

Went to see them earlier this year (Despite the ticket claiming i was going to see Sonata Artica :P). They ....ing pwned, Pagan's Mind supported them

Frist song i ever heard was Weballergy, and im ashamed to say i couldn't stand them at first :P Now it's one of my favourite songs

Once I began to get into Pagan's Mind and realized that both of them were playing together on the show I decided to skip, I was rather frustrated

That, and Sonata taught me how to play guitar

My first power metal song ever was "The Cage" i listened to it on repeat for like a week before i decided to leave my 56k internet running all day to download winterheart's guild.

I still don't have all thier cd's and it's shameful...I'm gonna have to track them down one of these days.

My local metal club has regular parties, each of them including a sonata arctica song-along.

I also saw them in a small club here in london. If i had the same sentements about tony as some of you guys, i probably could have grabbed things i would definitely be beaten and thrown out over.

Hey, Guys

I guess it's ok to bring up this thread again since it is an "Appreciation Tread."

I was wondering you opinion on which is the best Sonata Arctica album to you guys or which has the best guitar parts since everything else is good I'm sure of.

I have newest album I really like it and what is everybody's opinion on the new album as well did you like Jani or Elias better or the new progressive style rather than power style?

BTW saw them live in May they were great! Loved the show I got a little bored but Oh well.

Have a question about The Gospel or prayer request, PM me. Happy to help and God Bless!

I love Ecliptica, like Silence, think Winterheart's Guild is OK, and have little to no interest in the rest of them.

Ecliptica is in my top 10 favorite albums though, which kind of makes me sad because they keep getting further away from that sound.

It's the first album. The songs are just more fun to me (better songwriting I guess?). Every single one is amazingly catchy and bouncy, I can't stop myself from bouncing around and singing along whilst doing air guitar and air keyboards.

Haha. I'll have to check that album out then I think heard one of the songs where Tony is singing ridiculously high on it?

Yeah I think in general he sings a bit higher on that album. I saw them in May too and the songs they played from it were 8th Commandment and FullMoon.

Yeah I loved Fullmoon live! Hey, Who plays the keys on this album Tony even leads? Because, I'm listening to some of it and if its him I didn't know he played so well?

Tony is the man, as far as I know it's all him. He only stopped playing keys to focus more on being a frontman.

They were one of the first Scandinavian bands I ever listened to. I was a huge fan in middle school, in high school I wasn't digging the newer stuff, and then when Jani left, I pretty much stopped following them.

FullMoon, Wolf and Raven and My Land will always hold a special place in my heart though.

(The only clip of the music video on youtube had horrible audio)

I fell in love the very first time I heard "My Land". That was a long time ago.
Epic opening melody.

After I heard that I done a little research and discovered this mofo.

Love this demonstration! It's what kept me motivated for a good few years.
Amazing work.

My friend showed me Sonata back in 99 or so when they first came out with Ecliptica. I remember hearing it and thinking it was just too happy sounding from what I was listening to at the time ('tera, megadeth, maiden, etc). Thennn around 2001 or so when they came out with their second album, I came across the Wolf & Raven video online and just took it from there. I was a huge Sonata fan all through high school and was lucky to catch em on their last tour with Jani back in 2006 here in TX!
Cant say I enjoy their more recent stuff tho...

They're pretty much in my top 3 bands.. I saw them live last December with Delain and Winterborn and they were the best band i've ever seen live - really professional and every song sounded a lot like the record.. Elias Viljanen is a world class guitarist, his third solo album Fire-Hearted has some amazing instrumental stuff..
