I *LOVE* Pink Floyd but they are the first band that comes to mind when I hear "self-indulgent."

Good god- how mid-90's is the mentality behind that article?

I think it's self-indulgent to release a record that has no complexity, no sonic diversity, and no conceptualization.

1. Who the fuck is "Getback", and why is their opinion relevant?
2.That list sucks. Operation Mindcrime? Metropolis part 2? Use Your Illusion?

Retarded.

Music journalists have nothing to contribute except negativity most of the time and that list proves it.

Personally I'd call most modern pop self indulgent due to it's overproduction and auto tuning etc, imo Mariah Carey or Beyonce's endless high pitched wailing is far more self indulgent than any prog band could ever be.

Tales from Topographic Oceans is the most self-indulgent album ever. And he's a complete jackass for putting Operation Mindcrime on there.

And putting the artist on a pedestal as some god-like being, while feigning to act humble.

Modern pop is pretty self-indulgent, but just pretends not to be.

He's just parroting the usual bullshit mudslinging that people (myopic critics) have historically thrown at progressive/conceptual artists. I'll bet he likes 'Biodome' over 'Shindler's List' too because the later is devoid of humor and attempts to be be deep and meaningful (a.k.a. self-indulgent) in its content. Whatever... I'd try and hell him, but I'm not sure he would hear me back there in 1996.

I, in fact am proud to be self-indulgent with my music.
If music is supposed to be a form of self-expression doesn't that spell it all out right there?

The article does suck though.

Maybe I'm being too literal with my interpretation of 'self indulgent'.
