Your ultimate guitar tone

While f-ing around at band practice this past weekend, I started playing 'Through The Never' and my lead guitarist loved it. Then after a little discussion, turns out everyone in the band wants to cover it! Now the hard part is getting into shape to play that song all downstrokes.

So I just plugged it in to start remembering how the song goes... and it just reminded me how much I love the Black Album's guitar tone! It's the reason I picked up guitar in the first place. And that opening riff is just a killer example of my perfect guitar tone.

So if you could only choose 1 guitar tone to sound like for the rest of your life, which would it be? What drives you to get that perfect sound?

Rhythm guitar tone is my obsession, I think I've proven that with all my damn annoying rhythm guitar threads

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Marty Friedman's lead tone on the song "Architecture of Aggression" sounds like he is tossing anvils off cliffs into sheets of steel. That first bend sounds absolutely huge!

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

John Petrucci's lead tone on the G3 tour. If I had to live with someone else's tone the rest of my life, that's the one that springs to mind that I could be pretty comfortable with.

+1

Either that or Vai's tone on Alien Love Secrets. It just sounds huge for rhythm and sweet for lead.

In terms of tone I can actually achieve with my gear ... I find myself recently going for lower gain with a compressor between guitar and amp. Still compressed but less "hairy" I guess you could call it.

Yuck....How about the new Exoudus albums... Much better example of a modern Bay Area thrash tone (imo).

...Or Ty Tabor's tone.... not real heavy but very pleasing.

You must have read my mind, since I just jumped back in to add Ty's Rhythm tone on the Dogman CD. That is the heaviest he ever got, and man does it sound good.

That's probably #2 for me, too. I'm really not a "Marshall" sort of guy, but you listen to "Die to Live" and you just get all choked up inside, the guitar sounds so perfect.
