Although I can't stand metalcore in general, I must say that Shadows Fall has much more talent than usual metalcore bands.

Definitely one of my top 20.

I agree. I like singing, not growling vocals usually, and melodic stuff. Jon's got some reaally nice chops, and their riffs rock. The War Within Album, their newest one, rules. It's not overdone metal, it's just pure ass kicking madness. The only thing that I don't like about them, is the fact that they use the same tempo and song structure for every song. They need to switch it up a little!

The first song on The War Within, The Light That Blinds, is a perfect example of switchin it up on the intro... I'll let you see for yourself. But then they always go into metal riffs, STOP, vocals start, and the vocals are separated the same with the riffs... But woot for originality on the intro!!! None-the-less one of my favorite bands.

Also, +1 what David says. They are pretty good, but they get a little repititous.

Of the metalcore crowd, they're amongst the few I enjoy listening to. There's a lot of substance on their albums compared to their peers.

As far as I'm concerned, Shadows Fall's The War Within isn't metalcore. It's plain straight up thrash metal. I don't get the 'core' thing. Unless it's because their vocalist growls.

If you're just getting into Shadows Fall, The War Within is the album to get. Fucking killer guitar work. Heavy as hell. Rocks your world.

People probably call them metalcore because of their album "Of One Blood" has a lot of emo-ish singing on it. (Which I can do without!)

Either that, or it's because their first album, "Somber Eyes To The Sky", had a metalcore singer on it. (Actually, I'm pretty sure that's what it is, now that I think of it.)

I still like Of One Blood though, the solo on the title track is incredible.

I have Of One Blood, The Art Of Balance, and The War Within. I don't have Somber Eyes because I've heard it and really don't like it. (At all)
