Best Release of 2005

Ok, this is something I've been doing mentally for the last couple years as sort of an answer to the Grammys, each year choosing one CD as the best release of the year. For perspective, '03 was the OSI album (because it absolutely rules), and '04 was a tie between the Velvet Revolver and Alter Bridge debuts for showing that good, straight-ahead rock albums with lots of great lead guitar could still sell.

So, for 2005? Hands down, Opeth's "Ghost Reveries." Brutally heavy passages mixed with gorgeous melodic interludes, excellent production, there's not a weak track on the entire album, and even signing to a major laben didn't change the fact that these guys just rock.

The remainder of this thread will be dedicated to discussing how wise I am, how wonderful my taste in music is, and how honored you are to know me. Oh, and if you disagree you can call attention to another album.

"...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon."

Is this about metal excusively? In that case Strapping Young Lad's "Alien".

Otherwise, I'll go with Boards of Canada's "The campfire headphase".

Well, all wise and mighty Drew

OH MY GOD!!! I think I just pissed myself from laughing so hard

Anyway, Opeth definately put out an awsome cd, but I think Nevermore just beat them to all hell. Like you said, brutal guitar passages (7 string might I add) and clean vocals. I'd say with Jeff Loomis' shred, they edge out ahead of Opeth.

Well, I was going to go with Ian Thornley/Come Again, but it's a 2004 release that I didn't hear about/know about until 2005. :\

These lists are always impossible for me because there's just so much good music out there. If I had to pick one right now, I'd probably say Sevendust/Next. Their albums are always chock fuckin' full of badass songwriting, great playing and all around grooves that make me make the Newsted Madface.

Naw, absolutely anything, metal or otherwise. My favorite disc of the year just happened to be metal.

I'm completely with you, Chris, but in a sense that's why I've been trying to do this for the last couple years - to force myself to really simplify, in a sense, I suppose. I mean, there've been a ton of new releases that've absolutely rocked (Porcupine Tree's latest deserves a passing nod, too) in the last 12 months, but I'd say listening to the newest Opeth has had the greatest impact on my quality of life.

While I do agree with the aforementioned praises of "Ghost Reveries", in my opinion, the greatest majestic masterpiece of audio perfection to come out of 2005 was Nevermore's "This Godless Endeavor." \m/

That is all. Award given. You can close the thread now.
