![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Virtuoso overload I've seen probably more live musical virtuosity in one week than a person really should. --Last Saturday, it was Michael Romeo with Symphony X. --Wednesday, it was Allan Holdsworth. --Tonight, it was Hilary Hahn playing Paganini's First Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra. Jeezus, I think I need to go woodshed for about five days straight in order to feel like a musician again. ![]() BTW, in addition to being a hottie and having astounding technique, Ms. Hahn has the most lustrous violin tone I've ever heard in person, and I was sitting right in front where you usually hear the resin scraping on every note. Here's some video of her playing Nathan Milstein's set of Paganini variations: |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | For the Paganini First Concerto, I rely on Itzhak Perlman's classic 1971 EMI recording, and I would say that Hilary equaled or bettered that in every way except maybe for the part in the first movement with all of the double-stopped harmonics, but those are incredibly difficult even by violin virtuoso standards (and it's worth remembering that even back in 1971 there was a lot of editing done to studio classical recordings). Otherwise, she nailed all of the runs and made the harmonic and regular notes sound perfectly even. More importantly, her phrasing was very natural, and it never sounded like she was working hard. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | [i] like Salvatore Accardo's Paganini, both the concertos and the Caprices - he's got a loony sort of passion, but also an evenness of volume. Perlman tends to play everything so romantic, soft, loud, speeding up and slowing down - just play the song, dude..... Paganini is supposed to be played like a jackhammer, dammit.
