Vocals for dummies? suggestions? DVDs, books?

I bought myself an acoustic about half a year ago, and ever since then I wanted to learn how to sing, just a lil bit - so I could pickup my acoustic and strum a few cord and etc. I know that not everybody has the ability to sing, but I also know that voice is like a music instrument (in a way) - if you practice, and know right technique - you'll get better, i.e. will be able to tune in different notes, control pitch better, use your nose and etc. plus I'm not tone deaf and I used to sing in a music club when I was like 9 years old
and after I saw this vid yesterday - I want to learn how to sing even more. As I said - I don't want to become next best vocalist and etc, just wan't to leanr how to sing a little bit. I was hoping there is a learning DVD for newbs like me? I mean there is one or two DVDs about metal vocals - i.e. Melissa Cross, so there has to be something for normal singing, anyone can suggest anytihng? Thanks

Find a girlfriend who's a trained vocalist...thats what i did anyway. On the book front though, i've only ever heard good things about 'The Contemporary Singer: Elements of Vocal Technique'. You can pick it up on amazon for about £7ish with a CD.

My approach, thus far, has been to claim Tom Waits as my biggest influence.

OK, kidding aside, I'd love some pointers, too. I'll be watching this thread.

NeubyWanKaneuby has a spectacular aura about
I've actually watched the first zen of screaming dvd and she actually concentrates on singing technique more than 'screaming'... might be worth a look. the exercises are pretty easy to follow, just need to fast forward through all the talking and BS that occurs between each part of her lessons.

The breathing exercises alone helped me, but I don't practice enough, so I haven't made many strides.

My friend just got Zen if Screaming dvd - will watch it asap.
Finding gf who is a trained vocalist - that's pretty cool idea, but unfortunately all girls that I know sound like a bum after hungover when they are trying to sing...

I'll keep on looking for dvd's and etc, I think there are plenty of them, and at least a few good ones - so hopefully I'll find something.
