![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I make my music entirely for expression. If people like it, fine. If they don't, fine. I never had the goal of having my music be popluar though I'm not going to lie and admit I wish it was. I admit I'm being selfish with my music, but that's just how I am. I am a sort of rebel against poppy stuff, but i'm not rebeling for it's own sake or becaue I think I 'have' to, but a lot of popular music bores me. Some of it I like, but it's in the minority. One of my main gripes was that often a pop band would have something cool/intersting/wierd for some intro or interlude, but the rest of the song was completely cliche, and I'd be distappointed. So I decided to make my own music, my way, with no rules but my own. STARBUCK'S IST KRIEG!! "Stop eating chocolate, and go take pictures of your Squier with those monstrous strings. :P" - TomAwesome "I have had sex to Symphony X before. Not a good idea, I stopped to air guitar the solo!! : shred :" - stuh84 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think there should be laws governing who is allowed to play and own a classical guitar. I kid. As for the topic, you're right, and yet not. There are 2 reasons I push myself technically. Firstly, I flat-out enjoy playing and listening to music that is highly nuanced, it sounds good to me. Second, I DO like to impress people, but if you're a shred guitarist, the average joe is pretty easy to impress. Just play a rapid ascending scale and you'll garnish plenty of from those people. I would rather impress people who know their shit, because it gives a much greater feeling of accomplishment, even if the average listener can't grasp it. |

![]() ![]() | I'm in a band where all we do is write 3 minute catchy radio friendly songs and it's a good time. I would probably get slammed for it by lots of musicians but, it's fun and people seem to like it. Plus I slap over the top solos in a lot of them so I don't have to feel too embarrassed. Sometimes it's just nice to play music that evokes emotions no matter how simple it may be. I like catchy rock songs just as much as I like technical death metal. There's no rule I can find that says you can't do both so... yeah... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I couldn't agree more with this post, and it's an ethic i've used for a very long time. I don't find a problem with the way it was put across either like some of you have, i think it's well said. Writing music for musicians can only get you so far. It's that simple. You can write an uber progressive widdle-fest but only you and other guitarists can sit back and truely enjoy it. We're all guilty of it, but it's undeniably true weather you like the way it's said or not. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I don't write music for musicians or for non-musicians. I write music for myself. If I don't love it, then I throw it away and start over. I come from a perspective of "If I like it, then there must be lots of other people who do as well." That's why my band has some songs that are pretty technical and some that are insanely simple. Because I like to listen to both. If it sounds good to me, it doesn't matter whether it's technical or not. |

![]() I like music for a lot of reasons, I admire a band like Necrophagist because they dazzle my little brain with their technicality, and I like Chevelle's "Wonder What's Next" cause its angry and catchy. I play what I am physically capable of playing, and what comes out when I plug in and find a sound that inspires me. ![]()

. But what i think the thread-starter is saying is that you can't just approach the canvas with the ideology that you have to impress. But anyway, there's different music for everyone, otherwise we'd all listen to catchy stuff with no technicality
