This model is going the way of the dinosaur, to be honest, however. Since the demise of radio, music ind. is in flux, and looking for new, profitable models.
Many bands and artists make money the old way anymore - playing live. The importance of "albums" has diminished significantly with the rise of the internet.

I was watching an interview with Kevin Talley on youtube a while back...In a nutshell, he said.."There will never be another Slayer, Pantera, Megadeth, or Anthrax, because these labels have a small investment in every band on their roster...And their roster is comprised of 500+ bands".
Namely, Roadrunner is very guilty of this...Monte Oconner has over saturated his label in such a way, that nobody can big the big fish in the pond. Hell, even the mighty Hatebreed parted ways with RR for that very reason. Im no business major, but it seems all to popular for the major labels to begin "eating" themselves in their quest for dominance. And their marketing strategy is about as lame as a "Tickle Me Elmo" poster in front of the local KayBee Toys. |

I'll probably end up funding a private studio environment and do album recording, mixing, and production shit (Photoshop and photography whore; doing liners and design would be fun) for really my own gain. If 2-3 people like whatever I put out, awesome. If not, I'll have another way of looking back on what I was thinking most about at the time of writing (and what I would be writing music about), like a journal.

very valuable to read and keep in mind, and it'll smack you down to the ground before you even had the chance of even thinking about flying!
