"Jimi: Blues"

Amazon.com: Blues: Jimi Hendrix: Music

As I haven't plugged this album in a while, I figured it was about time for another one of my semi-annual diatribes about how hype be damned Jimi is one of the best contemporary blues guitarists I've ever heard, and it's a shame he never gets the credit he deserves as a blues cat.

If you dig chicago blues, if you dig Jimi, or if you just have a vague-but-possibly-misplaced trust in my taste in music, drop $10 on this album, and pop it into your CD player before your next road trip. It's some of the best driving music I've ever heard, to say nothing of insanely good blues guitar. Honestly, everything you need to know about modern blues can be derrived from the first 3 choruses of his instrumental tour de force on Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign."

"...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon."

Actually, besides a few of his hit songs, this is the only Jimi I can really get into. An awesome album.

While I have zero faith in your taste in music as you are Nirvana fan, I can concur that this album is awesome

My dad has this album, so I may be borrowing it for awhile. "Hear My Train A Comin'" is an amazing song.

The only creative accounting I have seen is Bush's plan to balance the budget by 2015.
Unless, of course, he plans on skyrocketing the debt at such a rate to approach infinity on an
asymptote, causing a giant budget calculator divide by zero error that reboots the country.

Jimi is awesome. I think he sort of started out with blues and then moved to rock because that was how he could be marketed and then he went back to blues when he had more control over his career.

This has been on my amazon wishlist for a long time (along with around 160+ other CDs).

I'll pick it up when I'm back at work and earning some moneys.

I don't think Jimi was that calculating. I think he legitimately evolved his music once he got off the chitlin circuit in the mid-'60s. His blues is deeper than guys like Clapton because he actually played the U.S. circuit with the great blues artists in the early '60s, as well as being a sideman for guys like Ike Turner. By the time he arrived in London, he was far more steeped in the blues than the young English guys were. But I believe he was already thinking of what to do beyond that. In that way, he was a lot like Sly Stone and Miles Davis around the same time period. He wanted to move the whole thing forward.

You also have to remember that the blues may have been a fetish in the UK in the '60s, but for younger black Americans it was basically hillbilly music for which they had no particular reverence. Jimi's thing was to take the blues and transform it into something completely new and freakazoid. And I admire him greatly for that.

I love this album. The off the cuff nature of it gives a real immediacy to his playing, and it is amazing how inspired some of his lines are. It takes a few listens to get over some of the warts, like the out of tune string on "Hear My Train a Comin'", but when Jimi steps out to take a solo, he just rips your damn head off. The unison vocal/guitar lines on "Catfish Blues" put "Voodoo Chile Slight Return)" to shame, and the best version of "Red House" ever recorded by anyone appears on this disc. And just to prove that he really can do it all, he gets down on a 12-string acoustic like you wouldn't believe.

Vision is a jewel in the rough
I was one of those guys that never really appreciated Jimi until I saw some of his live clips. I always thought the "Hey Joe" solo was meh... until I saw that he played that with his teeth! There was so much feeling and emotion behind his playing... it was like his guitar was an extension of his soul.
